Pros

Its just a good company. The pay is fair and balanced and the benefits can not be beat! This is the best employer I have had so far and I intend to continue working for them for as long as I can.

Cons

The union and their regulations are a little tricky to get used to, but once you are over that its all down hill from there.

Pros

After 8 years of downsizing, the remaining U.S. people are truly some of the best around. The U.S. technical employee pay is very good and the employees are motivated to achieve results. There is a good sharing of ideas among different organizational groups. The U.S. technical management is experienced and incented to achieve strong results.

Cons

Avaya is now rapidly shifting the technical work offshore to lower the cost of R&D. If you work in the U.S., expect to see your coworkers vanish and prepare to say goodbye yourself.

Pros

Avaya is a good employer when it comes to opportunities requiring your existing skillsets as well as the ability to learn new and expand existing skillsets. The technical community tends to be top-notch and Avaya products and services are generally the best in the business. Avaya has a large amount of intellectual property (e.g. patents) and the potential to submit patents for the company and be rewarded with a bonus for doing so. The benefits are good too, with descent healthcare and vacation benefits.

Cons

Promotions: There are generally no promotions above the MTS level at Avaya. Promotions to DMTS are extremely rare, but it means beyond exceptional performance YoY for at least 5 years in a row. In ten years, I have seen only 1 person earn a promotion to CMTS and 2 earn DMTS. Also: there are also two pay plans. Be careful when changing between the two because the DMTS can be easily lost when going back and forth between the same pay grade in the "Management Pay Plan" (MGR) and the "Techncial Pay Plan" (MTS/DMTS). Politics: I would compare the politics at Avaya to that of the U.S. Congress. It is extremely political and your success or failure rests upon your ability to navigate the political waters. It is very doable, but it takes a certain savvy as well as a certain type of personality.
