Cons

Working at Anywhere was one of the most challenging and disheartening experiences of my professional life. The culture was riddled with bullying, racism, and a lack of accountability, especially within management, fostering a deeply unprofessional and toxic environment. One notable incident involved a male leader who made misogynistic comments, expressing disdain for reporting to an incoming female boss. In addition, there were inappropriate interactions with his direct report. This created a situation where ethical boundaries were compromised, and it hindered his ability to address the individual's poor performance and behavior, as he feared exposure due to incriminating evidence, she allegedly held against him. Additionally, he resorted to passive-aggressive behavior towards other team members, ensuring that the direct report did not feel overlooked or less valued, attempting to avoid the appearance of choosing someone else over her. My own manager exhibited similarly troubling and mentally unstable behaviors. There were numerous occasions where they disparaged others in the team, used indecent language, and undermined colleagues’ credibility. The lack of professionalism extended to shocking moments. One manager, struggling with personal issues, often displayed erratic behavior and poor emotional composure. Their questionable integrity and judgment fostered a culture of division and mistrust. On one occasion, I witnessed behavior that was blatantly manipulative and unethical, including attempts to pit colleagues against each other. This same manager, in addition to being racist, perpetuated a toxic and unprofessional attitude that made them unfit for leadership. The public outbursts, personal attacks, and even arguments between management in front of subordinates were disturbingly common. Micromanagement was pervasive, with leaders seeking to control every aspect of their teams’ work while discouraging independent thought and initiative. Managers would go to extreme lengths to protect their egos and maintain control. If they felt threatened by an employee’s competence, they would fabricate lies to push them out or have them fired. I personally experienced attempts to trigger employees to act out of character, creating a pretext to label them as unprofessional or problematic. Even when expectations were exceeded, accomplishments were undermined, with claims that the work was inadequate to diminish confidence and self-worth. What stood out most was the absence of genuine leadership skills within the management team. Instead of fostering a collaborative and productive workplace, they were consumed by insecurities, resorting to intimidation tactics, gaslighting, and emotional abuse. Their actions created chaos with little regard for the well-being of their teams. Leaving this workplace was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I never reported anything to HR because I knew this behavior was widely tolerated, and they would do nothing about it. Many colleagues had left the team under similar circumstances, yet HR never took the initiative to investigate or address the root causes. Despite the challenges, the experience motivated me to seek opportunities aligned with my values and passions. This pushed me to grow and prioritize working in environments where integrity, collaboration, and professionalism are genuinely upheld.

Pros

Remote work (but was also a con. see below).

Cons

The benefits at this place were awful. The health insurance was borderline useless, so I had to contribute to an HSA account in addition to my already expensive health insurance. The pay raises were almost nonexistent, and we never received holiday bonuses. They also had a few massive layoffs during my time there. So, keeping people is not a priority for them. Management was also very toxic, and very cliquish so it’s important that you get along with them. If they don’t like you on a personal level, you’ll be in a lot of trouble. They pick favorites and do not set you up for success. My manager changed four times, each worse than the last. When my last manager let me go, they were too much of a coward to turn their camera on and left it off, which HR allowed. The people at this company were also so rude and abrasive over email and messaging; forgetting that the person on the other end of that email was an actual human being. The COVID vacation is over. It’s time to return to the office with the rest of the world. They need to promote in-person collaboration more. Sad I lost a paycheck, but so relieved I was done with that toxic work environment. Looking forward to leaving them in the past and on to better things. This company is an absolute joke. Stay away.
