Pros

-Benefits are good overall. The ESPP is probably the best one offered with the 15% discount on 15% of salary that includes a 2 year lookback window. Some people have been able to get 4x returns depending on when they joined/enrolled. 401K is average (3% match), and the health and dental plans are great. -Fast paced and engaging work with high rate of adoption compared to analytics in other companies. There are very few analytics projects that are not adopted or that do not impact the business. -Simplicity of products, data, and sales cycle. There's really only two products that Align sells: Invisalign & scanners. This makes creating insights and understanding the business very easy. -The company has had very high growth (~20% YoY) which leaves leadership generally open to trying new things and layoffs are unheard of.

Cons

-Compensation seems average initially but yearly raises are small (~3%) which can quickly lead to being paid below market value within a couple of years -Majority of the analytics work is reactive and reporting-centric. There is not a lot of time/desire/need for proactive or predictive analytics work. The company is all about what happened in the last month, and reacting to the latest reporting, rather than having a more long-term outlook. ~25% of most analysts' time is spent summarizing what has happened/changed each month. -While there is flexibility about when to come into the office, fully remote work is not an option with few exceptions -Work-Life balance is strained sometimes. While there are many company holidays and leadership generally supporting taking time to recharge, the reality of a fast-paced company is that many weeks you will need to put in 50+ hours to meet deadlines

Favoritism and Monitoring

Pros

Worked for Align for almost 3 years and had a great team of people in my training department. I have nothing but fond memories (and respect) for the men and women in our group. The technology they provide to both dental professionals and the general public are substantial (I wish I had Invisalign when I suffered through my headgear in my teen years...). A solid company both in their market space and their day-to-day benefit to consumers.

Cons

The company, though highly prosperous in the field of dental technology, was while I worked there, not professional in two ways. First, in the way they handled qualified people being considered for higher level positions. Specifically, in the Fall on 2020, our group of trainers were informed that one trainer was promoted to supervisor level. With 27 trainers and 5 existing supervisors, we were surprised to learn a person was promoted with no notice or chance for any other well-qualified trainer to throw their hat in the ring as they say. No-one even knew their was an opening. Second, in Fall 2020 the company had training supervisors monitor (i.e. jump onto) any online client training session with as little as 10 minutes notice. As any distance educator knows, there is stress in training a new client. This was an unnecessary added pressure (i.e. being monitored) that could have been remedied by simply recording the sessions for later review. I suggested that solution and was told that was not an option.

Extreme Politics

Pros

You get to work on a lot of things with the growing business, get to learn new technologies.

Cons

I'm hoping that this review helps you if you decide to join or not (either way). This company has politics at the most extreme level that you can think of. The general culture in IT is more of ‘ownership’. This means that if a team member has been handling a specific technology for a good time, s/he is an assumed owner. Any deviation from that is strictly not allowed and fully unsupported by the old school of thinking. You will find that the so-called leadership is all about who has been at the company for more length of time. This means that a Sr. Software Engineer may have ‘more powers’ than a management level team member because that Sr. Software Engineer is reporting to a VP. People are constantly looking to pull each other down rather than encouraging them to grow. The promotions given in this company are not based on your skills but rather based on the old timer’s old school of thinking. Promotion is not based on merit and your performance. You may be performing the best (and you will know it when you look at other teams) but that will not get you promoted. What will get you promoted in this company is your skills at playing politics. I’m using the following initials that you will be able to identify once you join this company (or get interviewed with). GG, EB, MK, SP, SK - all these are in Engineering and contribute majorly to the culture that top-level management has developed in the company. There’s a so-called ‘mentorship’ program in the company wherein you’re being ‘trained’ for a promotion. This is completely abused to get your point of view across (even if it’s different leadership). This provides an opportunity for a 'mentor' to control what happens in the mentoree's organization/team. The culture in IT/Engineering is like the government office in India. People don’t work hard to get promoted but they ‘show’ that they’re working hard. They hire someone who works hard, takes all the credit for it, and gets their own promotion in place. This company has a culture of ‘bypassing’ team member who is not in-compliance with the old school of thinking. This means that your manager will bypass you in some of the critical meetings, keeping you out of the loop. The team members also favor other leaders speaking the same language (from South India). If you’re not, they’ll be speaking behind your back and still reach out to higher management (not respecting you as their manager). The title of the team members is also set up to cause conflict. A Sr. Technical manager reports to a Sr. Manager which in itself causes conflict thinking that they're at the same level.
