Pros

Local job - No FIFO

Cons

Literally everything. - The pay is a joke. - They hire you as a "laboratory assistant" but make you do process/operator jobs. Essentially this is a way to keep your pay low but make you do much harder work. - Incredibly sexist. - You will never see a pay rise, regardless of how long you have been there. - Constantly harassed by senior management. - They want you to consistently cater to their schedule and needs but will never reciprocate. - They take advantage of international students who are desperate for employment. I have seen so many who dedicated years to the company and when they requested a sponsorship, they were told to kick rocks. It's vile and disgusting. - This job is advertised as an alternative to FIFO but the reality is that you're getting paid a fraction of what FIFO earners get and you're still expected to consistently commit to weekend and evening work. So what's the benefit? I'm not seeing family or friends anyway? I may as well do FIFO and get compensated for it. - They will fire you in a heartbeat as soon as the market starts to get a little turbulent. They show no loyalty to their employees whatsoever.

Pros

If you are motivated enough you can learn anything. Assuming you want experience on instruments so old there are no replacement parts. Also the people are good people even if they are stressed to their breaking point 9 months out of the year.

Cons

Corporate only cares about the bottom line. Which is funny because they waste so much money retraining people they can't keep because they don't pay them enough, and expect them to work in a highly stressful and often unsafe environment. They also refuse to buy new instruments while employees waste days or weeks trying to fix instruments that manufacturers will not cover because they are so old they expect you to have bought a newer model back in the 90's.

We do appreciate your feedback. At ALS, it is important to us that employees have a positive work experience and are treated in a fair and respectful manner. To maintain this environment, we have many programs and policies in place such as GlobalSay (our global engagement survey), exit surveys and employee engagement committees as well as training initiative on Respectful Behaviour at work. Over the years we have received feedback from thousands of employees. While we may not get it right 100% of the time at 100% of our locations, our employees have told us that we are doing a good job overall and have also provided us with additional feedback, which we have used to make further improvements to our workplaces. It is unfortunate that your experience was not aligned with the culture we have established at ALS.
