I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at CarMax in Jan 2022
Interview
Phone interview first with rep from CarMax. If they liked your answers they will send you a simulation interview on how you react to daily situations. Once the results of this are in they will call you back and set up a meeting to go into the store. Upon arrival at store I was not greeted , the store did not open for another hour. There were trucks in the lot with no tags and flat tires just sitting there. There were at least 4 others vehicles in this same condition scattered throughout not even parked eventually in the spaces. I wondered if I was in the mechanic portion of lot? I had to navigate through the back lot and find my way into the store. Once I entered I had to find someone to ask for help. I was asked to have a seat and wait. I witnessed other associates watch people walk up to the entrance only to be ignored.
I eventually was escorted to the back office where I was asked a series of questions involving the Star method. After that they gave me a packet to look at for 15 minutes and would get me when that time was up. I reviewed my notes and went back to the office. They then did a role play going back and forth. They informed me there was no right or wrong answer just wanted to see how I would address. I felt as though I nailed this process. One interviewer actually dismissed himself before we finished.
End result was I did not get the position and this is why I believe I did not. I think I was only there to check a box. Meaning they already had someone in mind for the position but In order to offer that spot they had to interview qualified candidates for the role. I was simply a pawn. I have no doubt if the CEO were to go undercover and interview that day he would also be turned down for the position as well.

Very relaxed interview, almost no standard "tell me about yourself, what are your strengths and weaknesses" questions. Need to have real world "Managerial" experiences.

Interview
They send you math and personality tests to take, and if you get a high enough score on that, you have a 15 min phone screen with someone from HR. Then there is a phone case interview. It was tricky because they give you all of the information over the phone during the interview, so you can't really prepare. The whole thing was very impersonal. They seem more concerned with being able to do mental math than reasoning ability and getting to know you.
