Pros

You are trusted to manage your job or function without being micromanaged. Fresh ideas and innovation are encouraged and if you make a compelling case you are empowered to implement your plans. The pace and rate of change - while sometimes taxing - means there's little chance of becoming bored.

Cons

The culture is one of managing-up where individuals who can talk a good game often are recognized and promoted while others with integrity and actual results are often overlooked. There is more focus on looking inward and telling a good story internally than really listening and responding to the customer -- and our stock price reflects this.

Pros

There really aren't any, unless you have a family and like being the one eyed man in the land of the blind. Also, if you get in good with your manager, it's very easy to slip between the cracks and slack off.

Cons

Hugely political, and managers are not very aware of who the good coders in the group are. Also, it's predominantly a marketing organization, so developers get stepped on. Also, it's heavily process oriented, but now we're trying to become more "agile". So now we have an "agile waterfall", which is just an awful awful idea. It just means that product managers can slack off far more.

Pros

Hmmm, management is good about accommodating time off when needed and....and, that's it.

Cons

eBay is pure chaos every day. Upper management is constantly changing which means regular re-orgs. We're a horizontal org, then a vertical one, and back and forth. We work in centralized teams, then six months later we're decentralized. Employees don't feel confident that the initiative they're working on today will be around next month or even next week. A large portion of dev and qa are outsourced to India and China which makes for a very long work day and employees don't score extra points for doing con calls at 9PM several nights a week as a result. Management does however, point out every misstep and task that was missed, and generally beats you down until you're questioning your own abilities. The work to employee ratio is unrealistic, yet management doesn't recognize that, they only seem to drive home how employees are under-delivering. Salaries are about 10% less than other companies. Management is extremely stingy in handing out promotions for anyone under a Director level.
