Pros

eBay is of course an amazing business - this is of course particularly true now of PayPal. Some of the leaders are very talented and the company offers no shortage of interesting business problems to consider.

Cons

The company has completely lost its direction and senior leadership does not seem to understand the issues.

Pros

eBay Product Mangers have a lot of ownership of the areas they own. eBay is well known in the Valley and from what I've observed, there is a huge alumni network. Generally, eBay'ers are well respected.

Cons

They expect product managers to juggle too many projects at once, which causes burnout. I also think that PMs at eBay get paid less than industry average. Stock price has plummeted over the last 4-5 years. There are a lot of people with underwater options.

Pros

The comp was pretty good when the stock price was rising from 2002-2004 but then the stock began dropping in early 2005 so the comp from stock wasn't great anymore. They raised salaries some to make up for it but that's when I left. The people who stayed behind were at a different point in their lives (kids to feed, etc) so they could afford to take less risk. I decided to go back to working at start-ups where there's more upside. The whole challenge with the business is that eBay preaches "community first, community first" but then to please Wall St they have to charge the community more and more to sell on eBay so sellers are finding other ways to sell goods online that are much cheaper than paying eBay/PayPal a 10% commission.

Cons

The culture there was pretty tough. It was very much a "kill or be killed" culture.
