Pros

I would not recommend or suggest to anyone to work at ebay today. Years ago I would have, but certainly not today. A group of people scattered around the United States ( early ebay employees referred to as "Remotes" ) made ebay a very strong respectable marketplace. The Remotes worked VERY HARD and put in many LONG HOURS. The Remote employee was proud and happy back in the early days before Meg Whitman. The Remotes were NEVER properly recognized for the hard work and dedication to this company. Ask someone today who or what is/was a remote ebay employee and what did they do, and believe you me, not one single person can properly address that question. WHY? Because they simply do not know....they were not there! Oh the storys we all could tell, but it has been suggested we all keep quiet.

Cons

ebay used to be the most wonderful place in the world. I was very PROUD to work for ebay. When Meg Whitman "walked" into her position and the new hires began their take over, everything the early employees ( remotes) worked so hard for was quickly dissolved and pushed down the drain. I began to see that ebay was on its way of being a monster, and then of course the evil greedy monster it is today.

Pros

It's an opportunity to work in a highly matrixed organization. It used to be about working for a company that had a purpose you could believe in... although it's a good bet that isn't the case any longer.

Cons

Too many chiefs, not enough indians: Too many MBAs hired to rank-and-file positions. The company's party line doesn't match with its bottom line: This is reflected in every business decision they make, and in the way they treat their people on the whole. Projects in the planning pipeline don't get useful feedback at the appropriate time, resulting in badly planned and mistimed projects being launched. In theory, the "trains" can be rolled back, but the reality is, once a project is past initial acceptance, the rest of the approval process is just rubberstamping.

Pros

I can think of no better opportunity to make a global difference in real people's lives for me.

Cons

A lot of top down management in our current culture, coupled with an "analysis to paralysis" tendency. Many managers seem to chase the latest "trend" or "catch phrase" in order to grow their empire rather than actually focusing on the right thing at the right time. This should not be a popularity contest, and we should reward employees that are able to (with proven accuracy) and willing to say the emperor is not wearing clothes.
