Great Place to Shop, Lousy Place to Work

Pros

Great Products and our customers love shopping there.

Cons

It's hard to know where to begin. But let me start by saying that this review: "Flexible schedules, thorough training, comfortable atmosphere, politically correct & safe environment, store clientele/hours, consistently productive routines, etc. Biggest Pro: employees are (pretty much) paid to pleasantly interact with the public & have an overall good time." is, except for flexible hours, the exact opposite of the truth and could only have been written by someone in management or a management stooge. With the possible exception of our GM and a few employees working here while attending school, there is no one who likes working here because of the drama, back-stabbing, bad morale and terrible amount of favoritism that runs this place. They have a very detailed point system and approach for finding ways to write people up but no real system for rewarding anyone for anything unless you're somebody's pal. And the mis-management starts at the top. Some times it seems like every department head (at corporate) is somebody's relative. That is the only way to understand what goes on here. Corporate makes stupid decisions and then those of us at the registers have to deal with the flack. A company can't refuse to give sombody their money back (only give store credit) because they wrote a check, can't refuse to sell alcohol to someone way over 50 because he won't show you a driver's license, can't deny someone access to in-store specials because they don't own a computer and can't run a custom-order business without getting a non-refundable deposit when the order is placed. Cost Plus did all of that only to change policy weeks or months later. And the waste that goes on in the stores is awful. Supervisors who've worked for other companies say they have never seen such waste And all the other negative comments about safety, the stock room etc all apply.

Pros

30% discount stores across the U.S. except upper east coast = potential for work in new location awesome variety of products food, wine, furniture, bath, art, collectibles... "management" wages are good

Cons

not enough staff to ensure good customer service = lower sales= less payroll $....anyone else see a bad cycle with this? stock rooms are over-crowded, hard to find anything and dangerous heavy lifting - this is a very physical job
