Pros

Merchandise mix, deals, customers, excellent educated coworkers/peers capable of doing a great deal more than currently do;

Cons

GM is indifferent to promoting from within; GM spends 80% of time in office with 10% contact with team; GM out of touch; Poor recognition of accomplishments; Immediate recognition of any shortcoming and documents that shortcoming for future reviews (one documented shortcoming will cause ALL acheivements to be nulified during review resulting in no increase in pay); 3 minutes late to work for any reason is a write-up; DM does not know anyone's name other than GM (I worked at an office with 1000 employees, and sr. executives knew your name, or asked your name when they met you in the elevator - DM doesn't care); DM repremands GM if "TOO MUCH TASKING" is going on during open hours, but then repremands GM for not meeting schematic setup timelines, and then GM writes up supervisory team for failing to meet goals; GM training is practically non-existent - relies heavily upon "the Degree" from university to help GM; Supervisor development is a FOUR LETTER WORD; Promotion from within is random, and the "once promoted" rule applies (once promoted, no further promotions unless you transfer); GM actively discourages employee transfers (not sure if this is company wide); When hours are cut, they are always cut from the highest paid employees first, who also happen to be the seasoned, trained, knowledgable employees usually (who actually have a vested interested in having their store perform exceptionally well), and finally from the part-time staff; CEO is a number cruncher - does not have the necessary skills to understand the new millenium's "new retail" criteria (people driven, customer focused, rewards and recognition to name a few items totally missing from the mix at the store level); Metrics, metrics, metrics. Not enough room to continue.

Pros

World Market/Cost Plus carries a variety of Unique item, Interesting music. Good employee discount. The pay is a tiny bit above average.

Cons

Absolutely no training. You are expected to do your job, fast (" you have 10 minutes to get this done!") and accurately but store manager has no time to train you and sends you to ask other supervisors for instruction- the supervisors and other employees clearly don't want this responsibility and just tell you to ask the store manager. It's a joke! What happened to being a "team player?" Also I was told to climb a high ladder and carry down a hugh box for a customer! I couldn't even if I tried! I'd end up falling for sure. Thank goodness the customer changed his mind. Not to mention, no one shows me where ladder or anything else is! How are new employees expected to do their job when no one has the time to show you what is expected? Extremely unprofessional.
