Indirect, fake and unfair work

Pros

Met some of the most incredible people. Free sweets.

Cons

Unreachable targets, constant criticism, unfair work schedules. The scary thing is that some of the highest members of management are the most immature people I have met - they are caught up in cliques and petty behaviour that reminded me of school. I was lucky to have had an incredible manager that listened to me and made work life bearable but they were also was put under constant pressure to again reach unrealistic goals, and was never recognized by those above them for their work. Nothing is direct in there, everything is behind your back, and you are made to feel humiliated for mistakes you make. Least transparent company ever, which is laughable as this used to be one of their core values. There is also a metric system displayed daily that compares everyone's metrics so if you are bottom of the pile sucks to be you.

Pros

There are some amazing senior executives, and some really smart junior people you will get to work with. Culture is good - you will generally work with nice, smart people who also value work life balance. You are generally encouraged to try new things and drive change and improvement which keeps the job exciting. People are excited to hear about Wayfair and the company is increasingly having a strong reputation externally. I think compensation is at market for more senior employees and certain groups (product, engineering)

Cons

There is a lot of chaos that makes the day to day job challenging between high turnover, constant new hires, some low quality of managers, constantly changing review and promotion processes and a lack of transparency around review and promotion process. If people were paid better, promoted more frequently, or given more than 2% raises, then a lot of the chaos and day to day challenges wouldn't matter as much. Some groups are definitely better about promoting employees then others. Also watch out for recruiting tactics where recruiters tend to bait and switch employees - selling employees on the job then offering a lower level or lower compensation than originally suggested, or suggesting an employee will be hired at a certain level but will be quickly promoted (I haven't heard of managers actually following through on the quick promotion that was promised). This was less of a deal breaker but there is also a general feeling of cheapness with 1.5% annual raises, no food offered for employees working late, limited vacation schedule (you need to take PTO for sick days, day after Thanksgiving, etc), and a strict maternity schedule
