Pros

You get plenty of hours if your availability is open, just not in the days you would like

Cons

Management is unhelpful when it comes to issues at all levels, very unfriendly with the associates. Policies of the store are often contradictory to what senior management will tell you, and they will reprimand you for such things as not doing as they say when store policy tells you something else. Very unprofessional.

Pros

Opportunity for advancement is there for those who apply themselves. Employee Benefits are exceptional. The company does a good job of providing profit sharing, 401K, and various insurance products at affordable rates. Any associate can have insurance if they truly WANT to have it. The company is responsible with the environment, and does it's best to operate in a sustainable manner.

Cons

Once an associate advances, the training is practically non-existent. Certainly the company provides training classes, but those classes are in many ways political and corporate indoctrination sessions as opposed to providing real skills needed to perform the job. Department Managers are not taught in advance how to perform their jobs and they either sink or swim within weeks. Assistant Managers attend intensive training classes, but once those classes are over, there is no mentoring or guidance in how to perform the job. Everyone who completes the assistant manager training program learns what needs to be done, but no one shows you how to actually perform the duties - again, it's sink or swim. There is no outline of how to or when to perform the duties - simply an expectation that they will be completed. Work life balance no longer exists for me. There needs to be flexibility for managment to remain active in the community. The new shift rotations all but cancel my ability to partake of organized fitness classes, community service groups and boards on which I serve. I used to be able to participate in groups that meet weekly, attend club meetings, and attend classes at the local campus. With the new shifts of 3 days on-3 days, in rotation, it is all but impossible to do so any longer. For associates in baseball, dart or volleyball leagues, they too will have limited ability to enjoy that part of their former lives.

Pros

Wal-Mart is a great place to start if you're young, need a first job or need a little money in your pocket. The pay is decent compared to other stores (Target, K-Mart), you'll get plenty of hours even if you're part-time and if you're store does really well, you'll get a very nice bonus every quarter. There's also a very close family environment among associates, I made a lot of really good friends in the near two years I've been there.

Cons

Incompetent managers, especially salaried members of management, will destroy your experience at Wal-Mart. You know there's something wrong when you realize that you're more qualified to be an assistant manager than the people who are actually assistant managers. Don't bother working too hard either because no one's going to care how much effort you put in. There's no point in going 'above and beyond' because so many people can get away with doing less than half. Also, if you disagree with management or speak up against their silly self-made 'policies and procedures, be prepared to have your job constantly threatened or jeopardized. Management is lazy when it comes to store operations, but the second you question their authority they will make every lasting effort to get you written up and/or fired. Wal-Mart is a perfect example of where being the manager's favorite will get you promoted faster than being the best associate. Aside from the unethical behavior of some managers and the dangerous work environments in the backrooms, as an associate it really feels like You vs. Management vs. Customers. The hostility that you get from everyone further adds to the poor experience. Amid all the profits, trying to please angry customers and home office, associates are treated poorly and are just plain forgotten in the mix.
