Not a good company to work for

Pros

If you like solving complex problems in a fast paced environment, this is a great place to be. You get to solve interesting problems at scale.

Cons

The new leadership team continues to mismanage their talent. They do not promote diversity in the work force, and they openly talk about wanting to hire younger candidates, which is a concern for those associates who are more experienced or have families. There is no respect for the individual, and work/life balance is not supported. This leadership team has created an almost hostile work environment and unfortunately, few people are willing to give feedback for fear of retaliation. Despite the fact that I believe in Walmart and the business that Sam Walton created, I would NOT recommend Walmart eCommerce as a place to work because they clearly have divested themselves from the values that Mr Walton believed in.

Walmart Response

Thanks for leaving us feedback. We rely on this feedback, so we can improve. It's great to hear you've found interesting and fast paced projects here. And it's true, the problems associates' solve on a daily basis have enormous scale, and lead to improving the lives of millions of customers every day. One of our guiding values at Walmart is respect for the individual and it's disappointing you're not experiencing that - that's not the type of organization we strive to be. Walmart values associates from all backgrounds and at all levels - and diversity in hiring continues to be a high priority. Furthermore, Walmart prohibits discrimination in employment, employment-related decisions or in business dealings on the basis of an individual’s race, color, ancestry, age, sex, sexual orientation, religion, disability, ethnicity, national origin, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy or any other status protected by law or local policy. If you have any concerns regarding discrimination, you can contact Walmart Global Ethics at https://www.walmartethics.com/reportaconcern.aspx# or call 1-800-WM-ETHIC. Or if you feel comfortable doing so, please send your feedback directly to me. I assure you we have a zero tolerance for retaliation. - Melinda Greene, Director, HR (Associate Relations)

Pros

- Decent cash compensation - Can be good work-life balance (depending on the group and your own desire to achieve / over-achieve) - Opportunity to work on projects at scale (if you find the right ones...) and make an impact

Cons

Pretty much what you should expect going in. Walmart is both: 1) Gigantic. Only the US Department of Defense and Chinese Liberation Army are larger. Think: massive bureaucracy, constant stakeholder management, turnover in management ranks that causes all decisions to get re-evaluated every six months, etc. 2) Clearly a few notches below Amazon, Facbeook, Google, Pinterest, etc. on the tech totem pole. Think: lower quality management, lower quality employees, people that don't really want to be there but stay for Visa reasons or until the options or retention bonuses from their acquihired startup vest, etc. It's basically all the negatives of joining Google (can be slow-moving and bureaucratic) without many of the positives of joining a Google (like free food, genius co-workers, and a fun environment). As such, what it is like to work here shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone. If you find the right pockets (of time and location w/in the company) you can use the the fact that nobody will bother much to stop you (either due to apathy, incompetence, or inability to make a decision), but otherwise expect to spend a higher percentage of your time on politics and eventually get overcome by the apathy and inertia and move on.

Pros

culture was fun at first, knowledgeable manager, exposure to wide variety of tasks/projects. decent pay and the unlimited PTO is amazing - but why would being away from the job be the best pro?

Cons

scope of the role is far too large and ill defined. day to day is spent flying by the seat of your pants to get things done last minute. upper management only cares about optics and reporting up, they don't care about developing those under them. nothing works from a cross-functional technology standpoint and forced to clean up messes/put out fires constantly as lowest level employees. anyone who has been here for a year is so miserable. i can't stress this enough.
