Pros

Training and possibility to move to Volvo trucks and other Volvo business units

Cons

1. Management is too slow to react on things. No stability for workers. Layoffs are common but only for workers and lower level staff. 2. More focus on politics and maintaining friendships than keeping talent. 3. Almost all the product are in loss. Every machine they build losses ~50% money since 3 years. Management just started to react now to make it profitable by laying off good workers. 4. Too many incompetent managers who has no idea about technology, business needs. It is always one way communication where manager is asking to do, improve process/product to workers but does not provide any mentoring, support and guide employees towards success. No accountability for missing targets, schedule. It looks like managers have lot of book knowledge but lacking in real world knowledge. 5. Management is slave to people in Sweden. Sweden runs a tight ship and unfortunately other locations are getting affected. They implement systems which works for them in Sweden but fails in Americas. Unfortunately Americas gets stuck with these processes which creates waste and adds frustrations. 6. HR is incompetent and does not know how to keep talented employees.

Years of mismanagement

Pros

Pleasant work environment. Decent pay plus benefits. Good internal training program. I feel like that VCE cares about its employees.

Cons

VCE: Tons of waste in engineering department. Very low efficiency. Negative profit on some of the products. Not enough margin to support a healthy business. Keep loosing talents. People still working here are either stuck or haven't found a better job. Engineering department: 1. Way too many managers not enough worker bees. Layers after layers of management, which provides little to no value but they sure adds a lot of waste. 2. Incompetent managers. Way too many 'resource manager' who don't understand the technology their subordinates work on. Rely heavily on their engineers to tell them how to improve their work. When they finally use their own judgement to improve a process or fix a problem, its often impractical or offering little value . No motivation, no morale, no pushing for results. 3. Incompetent people. Its not uncommon to see incompetent people with years of 'experience'. The ironic thing is a couple of those incompetent people actually got promoted to managers. 4. Wrong design methodology--rush to finish the design first and then do cost reduction. 5. Sometimes 'Volvo Way' gets in the way of efficiency and performance. Not holding people accountable for their performance. Tremendous 'respect' and tolerance for repeated slackers. 6. Outsourcing doesn't work as expected. Outsourcing is very common nowadays. When practise right it can be and is supposed to be very beneficial.
