Pros

The advancement ability at VZW is all about where you want to go. There is a career path for nearly anything you would want to do. The career progression plan is well laid out and provides a solid knowledbe base for advancement. The company provides $8k annually for tuition program, 100% match on the first 6% we contribute to the fantastic 401k plan, we have backup care options, we have ample time off to manage for our needs. The employee phone program is a real plus, and what we pay for our health care premiums is awesome. We also have annual profit sharing, and an annual bonus we get based on our performance and the company performance. It can be up to 8% of my base pay for my position! There are so many positive things about this company and where I can go, it is hands down the best employer I have ever had. The performance based culture lets me define my future.

Cons

While I do have to work hard, come to work when I am scheduled, and stick to my lunch/break times when working at VZW, I do not think that those expectations are out of line.

Pros

Benefits; 401k still being matched; excellent for union employees; FiOS sales starting to take off. FiOS had a rocky start, with installation problems, customer support problems, and billing problems. These are all improving now, and once FiOS is installed, most customers love it. If these areas continue to improve, the prospects for the company look good.

Cons

The company stopped contributing to the management pension plan; lots of downsizing going on in management; hard to say whether the huge risk of converting copper lines to fiber will really pay off in the end. Due to the size of the 'reductions in force' (downsizing) in the last few years, most management employees are doing the jobs of 3 or 4 people and struggling to keep up.

Pros

after working with the other major carriers, I believe Verizon is the superior employer. Benefits, compensation, job stability, and opportunity for advancement are the major advantages. People now see cell phones as more of a necessity, thus verizon is not suffering much in the current economic climate. verizon heavily promotes minorities and others who may be descriminated against ,sometimes even though they are clearly not the top candidate, which obviously may be a pro or con for you. I have not gone up for a promotion, so I have nothing personally to complain about in this area, though. Overall, I am very pleased with my job.

Cons

retail hours, working with the public can be frustrating
