Good benefits but no respect.

Pros

Ski pass, health insurance, the people, product discounts, free or discounted ski passes for friends and family, and lodging discounts.

Cons

They say there is upward movement, but I have not seen it personally. They do not respect their employees time, in or outside of work. Full time work is hard to come by. There is a very high turnover rate because the pay cannot support living in the mountains.

Pros

Worked at the corporate office in Broomfield and there are a lot of fun, smart people who are passionate about skiing.

Cons

There are several big issues at Vail Resorts - the first is that compensation is not even close to market. This stems from a lack of understanding that in a service business, people are key to a great guest experience. Also there is an underlying attitude that employees should be happy to have a job there. This lack of appreciation for employee contributions plays into the low compensation and a lack of respect for employees. Also, in some parts of the company, bad behavior is allowed to continue in the name of getting results through the leadership competencies.

Pros

Executive team is (mostly) pretty cool to work with. Good COO. Fun group of co-workers. Casual dress code. Efforts at sustainability and being environmentally responsible. Gives support to community organizations. A great job if you don't have bills to pay.

Cons

Absymal pay for non-ski-bum jobs; it's basically impossible to justify working there long-term because - as a full-time employee - I was eligible for food stamps because I made so little in gross salary. The company talks a lot about developing from within, but there is no actual path for employees to either develop skills or advance in their careers. The company's message of valuing their employees doesn't align with their current practice of under-compensating and under-valuing employees. Some managers definitely send the message that employee suggestions for improvement or innovation are not welcome (hint: if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got). Very little gender or ethnic diversity in hiring.
