Pros

-You meet some amazing people because so many people go through Vail in their Denver career. A lot of them are smart and motivated. -OK work/life balance if you’re on the right team.

Cons

-Turnover is high -The pay is really low. Pay discrepancies exist within positions. Unless you’re an ex-consultant you can expect to be on the low end of the ranges. Raises for top performers are ~3% and bonuses usually weren't given. Internal promotions are “capped at 10% raise” (but that’s only true when it’s a convenient reason to underpay, while some others get 15%+). -Perks are meh. Get yourself a higher paying job (easy to do in Denver) and buy your own ski pass. Health insurance is mediocre. You’ll rarely be able expense anything (like welcome lunches). You’ll likely take less PTO since it’s “unlimited” for many corporate employees. Discounts on gear, etc. vary based on what team you’re on. Again, just get yourself a higher paying job and buy your own gear. -The marketing org is particularly toxic. Everyone is micromanaged and fear-based management is the norm. Hard to do anything (even put out most marketing emails) without VP (or higher) approval. Middle management has no decision making authority, is overworked, and under a lot of pressure. Priorities shift constantly and everything is urgent. Specific teams are put on a pedastal while others are pushed aside. -Most leaders invoke their titles and expect to have no dissent if they are the highest ranking person in the room. -Gossip-heavy and politically-motivated culture. -Development opportunities are okay classes put on by passionate development professionals, however a lot of the content is in service of maintaining the toxic culture. Don’t expect to have real goals and since your manager(s) will turn over a lot, there’s not a great development path. -A lot of people take jobs here for the “prestige” but Vail’s growing reputation of being a toxic place to work is now a known fact to most who have been in the market long enough. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Pros

Comes with cool perks like discounts to great brands. A free epic pass for family is also a huge bonus.

Cons

This was without question the worst, most dysfunctional, clueless organization I've ever worked for. I can't speak for other departments, but the Strategic Alliance department was an utter disaster. Poor leadership, poor teamwork and a VERY cancerous work environment. I cannot urge whoever reads this to stay far away from this role.

Pros

It's easy to skate by when nobody around you, especially senior leaders, knows what he/ she is doing. If you're lucky enough to be considered "high potential" (a label bestowed to only marginalized demographics or those able to check their values and dignity at the door) you'll have no problem hiding your ineptitude.

Cons

Senior leaders (especially the C-suite) are just Wall Street deal guys with minimal operating experience and, as such, have little idea how to efficiently operate a business. Vail Resorts grows revenue primarily through resort acquisition, but the company isn't leveraging its scale to the fullest extent possible and inefficiencies exist everywhere. This is especially true of the corporate functions -- e.g. Finance, Shared Services, Marketing and the call center). In these functions in particular, people are in charge simply because they blindly smile and nod at their boss' inane ideas or unrealistic plans. Knowledge and experience are in short supply with this group, resulting in a chaotic environment where nothing gets accomplished and employee churn is unsustainable. Making matter's worse, leaderships' arrogance and pride prevent them from accepting that others in the business, people actually operating the business, may have knowledge on how to run things more efficiently. As such, there is little hope for change and organic growth of the top or bottom line will be much less than they'd be if the company let operators do what they do best: i.e. implement enterprise technology, develop intelligent employees (and pay them a competitive salary so they stick around), implement efficient and scalable processes, and leverage data to gain insights which, in turn, increase efficiencies and the bottom line. Overall, Vail Resort's is place where blowhards and yes-men thrive and anyone with expertise and a spine sees their career stunted.
