Was a good place

Pros

Benefits were good, people were generally friendly, work was mostly enjoyable. I had imagined that this would be a company that I would retire from.

Cons

About 4-5 years ago the company shifted focus dramatically toward DEI. On the surface, not a big deal but in reality it represented a shift away from VMware as a technology leader and toward VMware as a social justice company. Given that VP bonus was tied to DEI metrics, I found myself restricted on who I could hire for positions. This meant that I had to engage in discrimination in who I was able to consider for roles, and found myself "dumbing down" my hiring criteria due to lack of applicants who fit the "correct" DEI requirements. For a variety of reasons (and covid was a huge catalyst), general morale and work ethic seemed to decline greatly over the past few years. It became increasingly difficult to get anything meaningful accomplished in day-to-day work. The products themselves became increasingly bloated and buggy, plus the overall business strategy became muddled (specifically the cloud strategy). VMware recognized the need to transform from a "product" company towards a "services" company but simply lacked the ability to successfully transition. Major transformations require agility and ability to adapt products quickly, which is simply not possible for companies that have allowed themselves to become complacent.

Culture has fallen apart

Pros

good benefits, global in nature, great customers

Cons

Culture has turned toxic (employees are frequently gaslighted and disparaged. HR cases go unresolved. Spirit of collaboration across orgs is dead. Large proportion of people are all looking externally). New CDTO org fell off a cliff and has undercut the success of groups across the company (poor internal systems, processes, no vision) There are few good orgs left. Best senior leaders have all left; particularly there’s been a massive exodus in women leadership (VPs)

Pros

I learned late the hard way that the leadership is extremely biased to hiring their own ethnicity. Then promotions are only for their own ethnicity. VeloCloud is now part of Vmware under the same toxic leadership. They use VMware to cover their racist practices. Bonuses are taken from non-indian and given to indians. I am a current employee and I have seen how the VPs and Directors control promotions with clear racist practices. A lot of reports were sent to the vmware to investigate. What is the outcome? more toxic and alienation of employees who complain that their bonuses are stolen. More retaliation. Many employees had their bonus stolen this round of March/April 2021 and given to the directors indian friends.

Cons

This is as toxic as it gets. Retaliation if anyone speaks up against the racism and favoritism. Competency does not matter. Race matters. If you are indian, you will get 120% bonus. If you are non indian you will get 80% bonus. It is obvious, easy, and clear.
