Pros

This job is very stable and plenty of overtime is available to those who want it. The pay is higher than most similar jobs and the health benefits and retirement plans are fantastic. Vacation time is accrued quickly as is sick leave. Union representation is fairly good.

Cons

Incompetence and laziness are not dealt with. Management in a lot of cases is incompetent and too numbers driven. (But there are good people in management that I am happy to work hard for).

Pros

Managers will have the opportunity to work in virtually any field, virtually anywhere in the country. For the most part, promotions are handled fairly. Benefits are good, but not as good as people think! Slowly implementing new management techniques and philosophies (Lean Six Sigma).

Cons

Salary is below the standard in private industry. Plant operations are 24/7, so your job might have you on evening and night shifts and weekends. Post Office operations are more days and no Sundays. Micromanagement is rampant, and much the time managers are producing reports and responding to requests from upper management.
