Pros

Once offered a permanent position pretty good bet job will be there, never heard of layoffs. I worked in a smaller office in a smaller community so the co-workes were real nice as were most of the town people. You need to enjoy people to work with the community because it is more than just working with the 'public'. People relay on the postal service for more than just mail, in a smaller town it is the hub of what it occurring in the town, people would gather at the PO to chit chat about family, friends or issues within the community. As a windoe clerk it was not unusual to be placed in the role of listener to issues in folks lives.

Cons

if you deliver mail the weather is always to be dealt with, need to be a people person. The waves of mail would be overwhelming at times. One day you would come into work and see 4 trays of mail ( a tray is 2ft of letters placed back to back in a tray)for you to sort and deliver, the next day it could be 20 ft plus the magazines (flats) and newspapers and circulars. As a letter carrier these days were heavy to carry and did take longer. If you are the carrier to take over on the regular carriers day off it will take you much longer to sort & deliver the mail becuase it does take awhile to build up speed at "casing' mail.

Pros

Benefits are good. Work environment, depending on location, can also be good. Government works seems to be behind the private sector in regards to equipment, process and procedures, etc. Government positions seem to be more stable, so once your in your pretty well set for life.

Cons

Like all companies, the level of skill for supervisors and managers is dependent on each location you work at. Overall I think the skill level is below par. Depending on your supervisor, rules are followed inconsistently. If your friends with the boss you tend to be treated far better than if you just go in to do your job.

Pros

The only reason to work for the US Postal Service is money/benefits. There are not many jobs in todays market that pay as well as the US Postal Service without a degree. You will work long hard hours for the first three or four years. Things get a lot easier once you have a little time under your belt. The insurance benefits are great, and you can choose from several different plans. Although there is not a civil service retirement you can still contribute to the governments version of a 401K. This is actually a great deal with matching contributions.

Cons

If you want a nine to five job, this is not the place. Overtime is almost always the case. This is great if you want the extra money, but when it becomes mandatory nearly every day you can get burned out very quickly. A lot of people actually get used to the overtime, and count on it to pay the bills. This can be a huge mistake! What the US Postal Services giveth they can take away. Managment usually consist of people that have never done your job, and yet they tell you that you are doing your job wrong everyday!
