Pros

Job Security, due to the American Postal Worker's Union that cares about its members. In return, my co workers and I care about getting mail out on time, despite the roadblocks in our way.. Mail Plant is climate controlled 24/7/365, a Safe and secure place to work. If you're over 40 and been "unjustly fired" by your previous employer, USPS doesn't hold that against you. You pass the 473E exam, show up on time, follow instructions from supervisors, work together with your co-workers, and good things will come of it. Pay and benefits commensurate with other jobs in the area. Towards the top of the pay scale if you don't have a college degree. Once you make Career, eventually you will have many options to choose from in various departments of USPS.

Cons

The constant struggle we face trying to deliver mail on time. Mail Plant closings and consolidations have actually been proven to be more costly than prior to Bush's Postal Reform act of 2006. Even Congressional members are starting to see the facade this bill has perpetrated trying to pave the way for privatization of the mail by making us look like were slacking off in our duties. Some would not like working 2nd or 3rd shift(I prefer it), so if daytime work is needed, City or Rural Carrier is the way to go or find a Post Office needing Window help. Life as a PSE prior to conversion is tough, working weird hours and days and needing to be available on short notice, rarely getting the same day or days off each week, much less working the same hours from week to week

Pros

1. I can do whatever I want on the street, no people watching me! After two month I know every route, I take 20 mins lunch and 40 mins nap and finish on time (go back before 6 pm) plus 1 hour extra work! 2. pay is OK! 3. Listen music is the best thing when I walking on the street!--(Bring a charger so you can charge your phone when you take 40 mins nap!!) 4. They pay me for the weight lost! I lose 20 lbs. after 3 month work at USPS, what a best deal!!--if you wanna lost some weight, I suggest you go work for USPS, make couple thousands dollar, lose some weight and leave after three month! better than pay gym fees and make no money! PS: I work 4 month and quit USPS after, not because I lose 20 lbs., make some money and go. The reason is mail carrier is not my forever job. I got Master degree from college, and I want to experience all the life! MY manager asks me "why you wanna work as a carrier after you had Master degree?" I said I see other carrier deliver mail to me every day, I thank them and I wanna try it, especially drive right hand side truck is fun! Now I work as an analyst at international Bank in Manhattan, in office job all day and I miss the day back to when I carry the mail, listen to the music and deliver on the street door to door! Cause that 20 lbs. come back to me and gain even more!!

Cons

1. Bathroom problem. If you are in the country or suburb, finding the bathroom is what I think the worst thing. Especially in the middle on the street, go back or keep going? That's a question! Pee is OK but what if...?!! I cannot hold it for another 15 mins!!! If you can, good for you! I pee in my truck, true story! 2. Weather issue. - summer hot like hell, remember drink more water, but do not forget rule#1 : ) - Winner cold like hell, hope you are not in Buffalo area! 3. No dogs like you at all. When I walk on the street, I got shock by dog more than twice, case I didn’t pay attention and my blood pressure goes up! It’s just like you go to the haunted house and someone shows up and scare you! 4. Extra work! There will be extra work waiting for you! Most of time is 1 hour extra. I suggest don’t try to show manager you are the best, cause they will push your limit again and again! If they tell you come back at 5:30, don’t come back at 5:00, cause they will sent you to help other!! You do more job and pay just same as you come back at 5:30! So balance you time! 5. Seniority! I hate this!!! Because I am new and I always get the worse route. Or when a route split by 5 or 6 people, I pick whatever it’s left over and always the worse one! I pick LAST! 6. Shift station! I hate this one too! Because I am a city carrier assistant , then I don’t have a stable station that I can go regularly. They sent me to another station whoever needs my help, sometime 20 miles away from the station (happen one time), sometime it’s just the city that I don’t wanna go! One time I remember I went to a city that has NO regular mail, all they wanna me to do is sales paper! Cheap city! “Can I have a sales paper?” “Sure, you want one? Here, all yours!”

Pros

You'll work every day, all day. After you make 90 days of on job training. You lose your social life and gain a lot of cash on hand, because they'll force you to work as much as your co-workers, except your co-workers make double of what you do.

Cons

Do not expect off days. I've worked up to 29 days straight. Since you signed a contract saying you have to work without reasonable accommodation, you're screwed. Just do it, you signed up. Plus its more than you made before you got hired.
