Pros

Laid back position provided you come in no contact with the mail. On rare occasions you may be asked to perform duties outside your craft. If so your pay level goes up clerk work level 6, Carrier wrk lev 6, Maint.Mechanic work lev7. I prefer Working at a Plant you get more exposure to the other side of Maintenance i.e. Mechanics , Electrical Technicians, and Area Maintenance Mechanics. By working at a plant you also get to network much more with upper management & HR. And you'll also normally work 40 hours a week a plant depending on the type of maintenance manager you have that will fight and show a need for the custodial hours. Started in 2014 as a RCA resigned to change crafts. PSE Mail Processing clerk at a plant transferred over to maintenance as a PSE Custodian I will be converted by September 2016 to a career employee. Next stop Maintenance Mechanic.

Cons

Personally I don't care for working at the Area Office/ Local Post Office i.e. Locations with customer access. It's to slow not enough work to keep you busy and the job can become very repetitive. There's Nothing wrong with that, it's just wasn't for me. Unfortunately the PSE CUSTODIAN position is being done away with. Working at your local Area Office you'll work between 30-36 hours until you become regular. My Ratings below are strictly based on my personal experiences.

It's a good job

Pros

As a Rural Carrier Associate (RCA), I get good pay, good hours, and even though it's only part-time, I haven't had a problem getting all the hours I want. As long as you are flexible and don't mind going into other offices, you can work more than your regular days.

Cons

Learning all the codes that they have for every little thing. Each notice has a different code number, rather than a name. It takes a really long time before you get a chance at a regular route. Working out in the heat, cold, rain, snow, etc. can be frustrating at times, but that's what I signed up for. I knew what was expected before I took the job.
