Okay for a side job

Pros

Work from home. Flexible schedule. Ability to cancel up to 24 hrs per month and miss up to 19.99% of of scheduled hours per month without consequence.

Cons

Ever changing rules. Sometimes unkind students leave unjustified poor reviews and that makes bonuses almost impossible. Gets repetitive after a while. Low pay compared to every where else. No compete clause means you aren’t supposed to have similar work while working here even though the pay is low and sometimes difficult to get hours. Advancement is at the mercy of the mentor. A bad mentor makes this job almost unbearable.

Pros

This job is extremely relaxed and pretty easy to do. The hiring process is fairly straightforward, and you get to work from home! I tutor STEM subjects so my pay ranges from $15-$17 a hour depending on subject. Honestly it is a really great job to have to supplement income, demands are low, and most of the people I have interacted with "mentors" are pretty nice, with the ones that are unresponsive getting let go pretty quickly.

Cons

You are probably wondering why isn't this a 5/5 star review? They really like their job! Well let's talk about hours. When you first start out you will be a probationary tutor, you will not get to sign up for hours until Friday at 12PM EST. Good luck getting hours when you first start out, by the time Friday roles around 90% of the hours are taken. Luckily I live in the pacific time zone so I can sign up for midnight to three in the morning hours without it being a huge problem for me, but if you live in the eastern time zone this is probably not the job for you. Once you get promoted from probationary your sign up time will be sooner in the week, except in the summer when everyone has a weird sign up schedule. Now let's talk about signing up at 12PM eastern time. That means 12:00:00, it does not mean 12:00:15 as in 15 seconds after the time, it means you better be on a computer connected to a satellite connection that has the exact time and sign up at 12:00:00, or all hours will be gone by the time you refresh your page. This has been extremely frustrating and disappointing part of the job. I have been working here over a year and seen many tutors complain and nothing has changed. So if you have something to do at noon EST this is not the job for you, because you will never be able to get hours.

Pros

Ability to work on your own schedule. Can work from anywhere with an internet connection, allowing for greater mobility. Good way for students to make some money while taking classes, or for working professionals to supplement their income. Typically easy to return to the company again after leaving. Merit-based system which allows tutors to move up in level, granting them a greater pay rate and priority in scheduling their hours. Regular feedback on how tutor is performing and areas that can be improved. Constantly expanding subject offerings allow tutors to teach a greater variety of subjects if they so choose.

Cons

Fast-paced environment can be very stressful. Student reviews are very important (they are a driving factor in earning promotions, and tutors can be dismissed if they are too low), and sometimes tutors must deal with disgruntled students or students who are just fooling around and have no intention of learning. These students might leave bad reviews that are undeserved. This is conducive to an environment where tutors are pressured to keep students happy at all costs. Pay is a lot less than many in-person tutoring jobs, but the time saved by not having to commute makes up for this to some extent. It can be difficult to get on the schedule at first, and to get more than the minimum number of hours (5, 6, 7, or 8 per week, depending on tutor level).
