Pros

Working from home, create your own hours, no direct management. You can basically work however much you want, and do it from home.

Cons

Their pay is low, 30% of what a face to face tutor would make. The inherent deficiencies of online tutoring are maddening (speaking conveys more information faster than typing).

Pros

You tutor students one-on-one via an online classroom program. No voice or video, just instant messages and a whiteboard to write on. You have total control of your hours worked, and money earned gets directly deposited into your bank account. There's frequent feedback on the quality of your sessions, and promotions occur with good regularity. What can I say, it's nice to work from home.

Cons

The pay is not good compared to tutoring positions in person..they start off at about $10/hr..I've been tutoring for about 2 years and I'm up to $13/hr. But you don't need to drive to work or pay for food out, so that saves some money there. The only other downside I can think of is that taxes are not taken out of the paychecks (you get a 1099 form), so when tax time comes around you will have problems if you don't save up for it. Oh, and paychecks are monthly, which is rough if it's your only job.

Pros

The flexibility in scheduling hours is unbeatable. Now that Tutor.com offers services 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, you can pick any time to work their 5 hour/ week recommendation. You also have great flexibility in canceling a scheduled session when an emergency comes. While the pay doesn't quite compare to what a private tutor could earn on their own, the ease of the online system, their payment options, the unbeatable flexibility and the fact that you can do it from anywhere make for a job I wouldn't give up.

Cons

The pay could be better. In some way they've actually decreased the pay for the tutors in recent years. This was originally due to the "recession," but I'm not sure if it will increase afterwards.
