Pros

-Young crowd, most people in 20s/30s so it's easy to make friends -Nice midtown office -Interesting position, you get to speak with people from all over the world everyday

Cons

-Very long hours, 60-70 hours per week is the norm -Very low pay, about $36k/yr. When you break it down to the houry wage, its somewhere around $15/hr. -Most people burnout or get fired within 6 months-1 year. Or management will try to find a reason to fire you anyway. Within 4 months of when I started, 7 out of the 11 people in my training group were gone. -Hard to take time off since it's always so chaotic and busy -Sometimes management overloads you on projects with ridiculous turnaround times (aka 3 hrs) -Dirt cheap budgets on projects which in turn makes you feel scummy for asking translators to work for .03/word (yes, 3 cents!!). -Much of the blame on mistakes gets put on project coordinators, even for things that are out of their hands -Very bureaucratic operation. For everything that happens, there is a form to file to make something happen. If you do well, a form is filed to recognize it. If you do poorly, there is a form to recognize it. Quality Assurance must be a very busy department.

Pros

1) This is a young company, hiring entry level employees, straight out of college. You will meet a lot of fun and interesting people here and make lasting friendships. 2) You are going to be working in an extremely fast paced/high stress environment. After a few months, you will become very efficient and adept at working under pressure.

Cons

1) Do not expect to have any work/life balance working at TransPerfect. Depending on your department, you will work 50-80 hour weeks. Although the company tells you that the official hours are from 8:30 - 6, you know you are having a good day if you can leave before 7. Also, just because you are working the hours that your I-banking friends are working, it doesn't mean that you are going to make nearly as much money as they do. Your base will probably be around 35k, with quarterly bonuses of a few k's. 2) Pressure from management to handle more and more projects: Because TPT is so understaffed due to a steady stream of people leaving, there are always more projects than the staff they have can handle, which means that the managers will pressure you to take more projects. They tell you that it's up to you to control your workload, but at the end of the day, you end up taking way more work than you can physically handle. 3) The penalty system: When a project goes wrong or when a client makes a complaint, it's automatically a Project Manager's responsibility. As a result, you receive a negative feedback, which at the end of the quarter affects how much bonus you will make. To summarize, you have no life, you make no money, and you get blamed for things that are not under your control.

Pros

It's hiring in the current economy. But hiring continuously as about 50% of new starters quit within 2 weeks.

Cons

Enormous pressure to low-ball translators and have work turned around quickly. Emphasis on speed rather than quality. Continuous pressure to get work turned around. The problem being that the work isn't in your hands. No sense of accomplishment can ever be realized as more deadlines are always on the horizon. Results from unrealistic deadlines and having to use the cheapest translators on the planet are that errors are made. You will then lose money on your bonus and receive negative feedback. All of this despite the fact you can only do the best job possible with the funds afforded to you. A walk around the office will confirm that hardly anyone has any experience at all. Senior management is absolutely terrible.
