Pros

Salary is above average for hourly and most exempt employees. Decent benefits comparable with rivals in the sector. A really good 401k/cash balance pension plan for newer employees. 9/80 work schedule and good job stability in tough economic times.

Cons

Whew where to start. Overall its a European run company and their global decisions are not always best for each region. The atmosphere here on the gulf coast is very different from Europe right now. The perception within the company is that non French employees are treated like second class citizens. The focus on cost control is so intense that they have cut and consolidated many positions and the consequences are showing up in the form of injuries, fatalities, and near miss incidents. Within the next 2-5 years the company will have a major release or explosion at one of the plant sites that will include fatalities. A visit to the plants exposes you to the epitome of the good ol' boy network. If you're part of the clique, then you are well taken care of, otherwise you are expendable. Employee turnover is rampant at all levels of the organization. Mediocrity is encouraged by not adequately rewarding high performers.

Pros

It's a multinational Company with a diverse team of professionals who provide training and mentoring to young trainees. The company is involved in both the upstream(Exploration) and downstream(refining&Marketing) sectors therefore offering a wide variety of opportunities for career development in the oil and gas industry

Cons

Very selective, None, None, None

Pros

The Research and Technology center was a rewarding place to grow iniitally. The ISRS and Modern safety management is probably in the upper quartile. Technical service is very challenging with many chances to learn client's processes and TOTAL's internal workings. The stock option purchase plans were great as well as the 401k. 3 weeks vacation at the start was also nice.

Cons

It was all about reports and not about substance: call reports, project reports, monthly reports, weekly reports, telephone call reports and more. The second-hand perception of what a client thought and not what the client was actually thinking was how I was graded. Pretty convoluted! supervisors need training in HR skills. Great technically, but half in supervision are glorified chemists or technologists and should stay in their specialties not in management. EXPAT's are favored over all others. Many felt we were passed over unless we went overseas on assignment. Even those positions were very selective. I only knew one in our group that had been assigned overseas for a couple of years. the pay is capped at the midpoint for petrochemicals and refining industry. the work load increased with minimal bonuses and raises during my tenure.
