Pros

The Container Store is incredibly consistent across the country. It is wonderfully liberating to know what is expected of you. The communication at the store level is second to n one in the retail industry. I have been continually surprised by the efficiency of communication and the grace in which it is shared.

Cons

The Container Store is not everyone's cup of tea. You do need to be high energy. You need to check your attitude at the door. You have to react fast to the needs of the business and be able to manage your peers. It is not an easy job. The hard work you put in is rewarded in the growth of your co-workers.

Pros

The manager of the DC store is a great leader that is a wonder to work for. He treats everyone fairly and treats men and women the same based on competance and performance. He is direct and to the point, which would be extremely valuable for him to convey to more of his staff. He never asks you to do jobs that he would not jump in and help you with (and frequently does exactly that, even in late night operations.) The old guard at the stores are great employees that really know their stuff. They work very hard, and make intensity and excitement about getting the job (merchandising the store and selling product) legitimately fun. More than half of this is that they are just great people, and it shows. All of the managers are technically skilled.

Cons

The Container Store is a pretty decent place to work, but one serious downside is that it, just like many places these days cater pretty heavily toward female workers, and being an organization and storage seller, it is heavily dominated by women, and somewhat hostile to men (and especially unfair, due to men doing much more of the heavy lifting for the same pay.) Being in DC or MD stores, you will be privy to a heavy dose of progressive viewpoints that they feel it is appropriate to express openly in the workplace, but hostility toward former military servicemen is allowable. Team Leaders (Assistant Managers) are not *nearly* as competant as the store manager, who is well trained and a great leader, and treats everyone, from all walks of life, fairly. "Drinking the Kool Aid" about being unecessarily excited about store activities (this is not the same as being driven, they seem to expect you to be literally happy about this stuff) is a painful experience.

STILL a great place to WORK

Pros

Without a doubt, my co-workers are the very best reasons to work @ TCS. The people at the helm of our company are extraordinary in their visionary leadership, positive attitudes and approachability - they deserve every accolade received. I'm surrounded by some of the most talented, hard-working, genuinely caring and truly funny people ever. As anywhere, there are the negative folks too, yet most people I work with usually make my day in one way or another. The benefits are decent; schedules are what you'd expect for retail; daily company-wide communications are amazingly wide-open; and it's a pleasure to be working here most of the time. And it is WORK - the expectations are very high and those that do not meet them stand out as an exception to the norm.

Cons

Behind the veil of everything the company is well-known and recognized for, there is a constant current that can make one feel a bit uneasy. There's a "Kool-Aid" some people are heavily drinking and others are allergic to, perhaps because there are just too many additives that aren't real. When BS is coated in syrup and enthusiastically served up, it's still BS and hard to accept a helping of. Some Managers are superstars in their field, yet should not be expected to manage people as well (because they're horrible at it and it takes away from what they really do best). Supervisors that were great workers aren't necessarily decent supervisors either, especially if they have Managers that do not have the time or skills to develop them properly. This is true anywhere, yet with so much we are known for, it's disappointing to experience it here. It's like the Disney World of retail, in that everything is better than you could ever have imagined in so many ways. And the downside is that it's a job, people are concerned about their jobs, and things that smell fishy are fishy - yet we must not waste time in fault-finding. The biggest downside is fear about being "thrown under the bus" by any co-worker who believes that doing so will get them ahead here somehow. People are people, business is business and life can be difficult. No downside here is bigger than the option of being without a job and without insurance for my family.
