Cult-ish, Creepy, Relieved I Left

Pros

Really decent pay for retail work. Uniform is comfortable. Employee discount is fabulous. The product and store is AWESOME. I was (and still am) a huge fan of the store and the products which was why I jumped at the chance to work there when the opportunity to presented itself.

Cons

There was clapping, chanting, singing, and hand-holding during training. Very kumbaya, sitting by the campfire-type crap which didn't suit my personality at all. I don't like phoniness and a lot of this felt very phony and contrived. The store has team huddles at the start and end of each day. Someone starts a slow clap and everyone is expected to join in. One time I didn't clap and a team member got attitude with me for not falling into line. You couldn't be an individual with your own personality. You stood out if you didn't participate in even the silliest stuff. Management didn't want anyone walking out of the store alone at night. Part of it was concerns about safety, part of it is part of their loss prevention strategy. A couple times I did walk out alone because no one else was getting off at the time or people were doing other things and I was ready to go. Team members looked at me like I was a martian for having the gall to walk out alone. When our new store had corporate trainers visiting, local management chastised the staff for not asking enough questions of them and felt we weren't contributing to the conversation. They were extremely concerned about setting a good impression for corporate so they treated us like school children. It was insulting. Everything just felt FORCED. Nothing was organic. From management's constant parroting of "I LOVE my job!" to the silly clapping and singing, the chastising for not asking enough questions...I just felt like I was a part of a cult and I was the only one who hadn't drunk the kool-aid.

Pros

Generous employee discount, made some very good friends working at TCS, limited benefits for part-time, more formal training than other retail stores

Cons

*High turnover in our store with very little room for advancement especially if you're part-time. *Full-time employees and store managers that have left the company while I've been here have all been replaced from the outside. *Full-time employees have input in part-time reviews but not vice-versa. *Ever since the company went public it is ALL ABOUT THE NUMBERS--even if you are one of the top performers it is never enough; if you're an elfa designer there is even more pressure with numbers to hit a minimum dollar amount for master closets, % of same-day closes, % of spaces sold compared to your total , % of sales installed by elfa Installation; if the customer wants to think about it and purchase another day when you're not working you get no credit for the sale; however, elfa sales numbers are a part of your review and it does have an impact on your raise. *Closing shifts require cleaning and getting the store ready for the next day--part-timers usually get to clean the restrooms. *We used to be chastised if we didn't meet certain goals for obtaining email addresses; now it has changed to signing up people for a new perk (be sure not to say "rewards" or "loyalty") program using new tablets; the new tablets do not allow you to simultaneously ring up sales at the register while they sign up--this has translated to longer lines and angry customers. *Managers are too often behind closed doors in a meeting or on a conference call. *Computers/registers & tablets go down regularly.

Horrible on all fronts

Pros

Elfa. Only Elfa. But not the new stuff.

Cons

C-suite, specifically CEO and COO. Who put these people in charge? Whoever it is should be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible for causing the death of TCS. Lack of understanding of our customer Lack of understanding of what made TCS amazing Do not expect consistent or worthwhile raises. The company feels very comfortable withholding raises to the masses while paying out bonuses for poor performance to the buffoons in leadership. Expect to be worked hard without thanks or compensation. It is not unheard of to have employees "fill in" for a role for a "few months" to "see" if they are qualified. Don't fall for it. More work and responsibility without the additional compensation. Communication is Leadership is just so much graffiti on the wall. There is no communication or inclusion. Low, low stock price. The only person I want working here is someone I don't like.
