Pros

You can make a few (I emphasize a few) great friendships. You get an Americorp award if you haven't received it already.

Cons

They focus on Black and White tensions but ignore the histories of Hispanics, Natives and Asians. Many of the institute employees have a White Knight mentality in which they believe their way is the best way and look down on veteran teachers who have not been involved with TFA. There is no responsibility taken for the lack of progress the organization has shown throughout the last 25 years. At times it feels like a cult. Their political branch has a man who is homophobic running it. I would never recommend anyone work for this organization. It was honestly the worst decision I made.

Pros

To be clear, I was a corp member, not technically a TFA employee. However, the pros were the personal growth you will experience as a result of the intensity of the program

Cons

Very cultish culture -- either you 100% buy into the movement and all its buzzwords, idealistic goals, and questionable practices, or you will feel isolated and desperate to get out. The support provided was ultimately more burdensome than it was beneficial.

Pros

Very well respected organization. Great to have on your resume. This is one nonprofit that completely gets the importance of establishing connections with corporations -- for funding, support, and connections. Lots of opportunities to get involved with innovative projects, infrastructure build outs, etc.

Cons

If you're not a corp member, you won't be perceived as an equal. Ever. Organization grew too quickly and the infrastructure couldn't keep up. Very young folks with very little experience with fancy titles -- VP, MD, SVP. Just because one goes to the "best of the best" school does not mean that one is equipped to walk into a role that would normally require 10+ years of experience. Be prepared for the very long work weeks. If you have a family, are over 35, or value a life/work balance, this may not be for you.
