Pros

An all black uniform and no restrictions on hair or nailvarnish colour, the majority of customers and daily interaction with them, staff discount for yourself and a friend or family member, (but lots of items cheaper when on offer elsewhere even with the staff discount).

Cons

Pretty much everything else - 8 hour contracts, lied to from the beginning to get you on board, get told the rota is done a month in advance so that you can plan around it but in reality hours change or are added to the rota from week to week, they don't like you asking questions about procedures and would just prefer robots to do as they say, no contract seen for the time I was there although by law it should be seen and signed on the first day of employment, all managerial staff close ranks even if you've done nothing wrong and they themselves are about to leave and in an unguarded moment have told you that this is really a dreadful company to work for, five hours reading/tests in a manual to undertake at home as they're too tight to pay you to do it on the shop premises as part of your staff training, the daily searches as you leave the shop not just of your bag, (as most other retail outlets do), but also of your pockets and shoes as well, minutes at disciplinary meeting not taken correctly with big chunks missing, mandatory monthly staff meetings after shop closure which not told about at interview, (although this is paid but cost more in fares to get to them if not on rota to work that day than the one hour payment received for attending the meeting).

Pros

Salaries are better than market rates for the right people, excellent benefits and a real work-life balance. Flexible working is encouraged, fantastic people to work with and clear succession planning is evident. In the short time I have been here, I have made some good friends and really looking forward to a very long term career with Superdrug. I'm not one to name and compare companies, but having previously worked for 2 out of the 4 BIG 4, I would choose Superdrug anytime, people here are hardworking and dedicated to their jobs. Superdrug, A GREAT company to work for...

Pros

Quite easy, decent salary on a par with other retailers where you need to work significantly harder. More straightforward than a lot of retail management jobs.

Cons

Area Managers are clueless and the systems are appalling. Trying to contact someone in Head Office can take weeks. Lots of contradictions and a lack of planning and communication is obvious at all levels. As one example, there was a communication from a retail director sent out saying there would be no emails sent during peak trading hours of 10 - 4. Unfortunately this was only sent to stores, meaning a check of the email system at 5pm would lead to a glutton of messages which then had to be dealt with, as Area Managers and Head Office personnel had been sending emails all afternoon! There were also some fibs told during my recruitment, and when I raised these with my training manager the response I got was "Yes, they do tell lies in order to get people on board" - unbelieveable!
