Pros

Stable company, medical benefits decent

Cons

Employees are just a cog in a wheel, management more focused on personality and perceived "behavior" than actual performance and productivity, no opportunity for internal movement outside of your specific department, if you want a different role (including lateral) you have to quit and return, organization is extremely top heavy (example - senior manager, manager, supervisor and lead over a team of 3 people)

Pros

Interesting work Pleasant co-workers and supervising attorneys Free coffee and espresso beverages all day long 30% discount in stores on purchases Free lb of packaged coffee each week Reasonable health benefits, although employee percentage of cost continues to rise If a fan of coffee, you have arrived at Mecca and can become a "coffee master" Product testing on site lets you sample new offerings before they become mainstream Management that really does let you ask anything you want at quarterly open house meetings

Cons

Lots of changes in management the past 2 years (President, US, President International, CEO, EVP's and more) Howard has cleaned house so few women in top leadership roles any more Employee stock options are miniscule. Annual bonus would be more welcomed. Employee stock purchase discount dropped to only 5%, making it nearly pointless. Some of heart and sole of company lost with long time staffers cut or forced out. Company isn't nearly as "cool" a place to work as it was 5 years ago. Seems more like just another job, with people looking out for themselves instead of their coworkers. Layoffs have disheartened many partners who were staunch supporters. Few speak glowingly of company any more.

Pros

Fairly good benefits, flexible work schedule, nice amenities (at the headquarters in Seattle).

Cons

The worst part about working at the headquarters is the 3-year wait to get into the parking garage. The only other option is to park a mile away and take a shuttle. Which involves fighting for a parking space, waiting long periods in the rain and cold, bumping through the industrial district in a shuttle with no shocks, and getting held up as much as a half hour by trains (I cross 5 train tracking coming to/from work, and have been delayed up to an hour). Also, the stadiums are close by, so when a game lets out, the traffic can delay you an hour or more as well. The commute/parking is a nightmare! I'm looking for another job just because of the commute/parking headaches. Also: Anything you did before you came to Starbucks doesn't count. They put a premium on tenure, and on "retail experience," i.e., starting out as a barista in the stores. If you are an expert in your field but do not have tenure or store experience, you expertise counts for nothing. If you start as a new employee, you get no sick leave, almost no vacation, and you have to wait 3 years to get into the parking garage. If you don't already work for Starbucks, don't start. You won't have enough seniority. Oh, and accomplishments don't count either. It is not what you do, it is who you know. If you are very political and make the right friends, you will do fine. If you are merely fabulous at what you do, you will fail. You must be a schmoozer.
