Pros

Good pay for Graduate Students, union protections, health care, etc

Cons

If you can't find an advisor, which is harder than you might think as the federal government behaves erratically regarding appropriations, you have few options. I have seen people join random labs they don't care about, lose all of their options to fellowship students, be KICKED out of labs, and drop out. It's a funding issue, and more and more the student needs to come with funding. Also Stanford is cowering when it comes to DEI.
