Pros

Stanford Residential Computing understands well that its RCCs are also students, and that our schoolwork should come first and foremost. At the same time, it is great to be part of a professional community, even while on a university campus.

Cons

Being an RCC is not a career, so there is no place to move up to... we just keep our same job (if they like us) and do the same thing from year to year. After two years of doing it, I have become good at my job, but there is not much new or exciting to keep me enthralled.

Pros

highwire has a friendly, relaxed environment, and for the most part, people seem happy to work there. you can bring your dog to work with you (if it's well-behaved), and that adds to the fun atmosphere. the absolute best part of working at highwire press is that you are an employee of *stanford university*, which comes along with a tremendous set of benefits: lots of vacation, great retirement, access to athletics and classes on campus, etc.

Cons

depending on what position you have, the job skills may have limited application outside of the highwire press environment. however, in 2006 this was changing, so perhaps is better now. my job requirements did not change dramatically over the time I was there, so it got a little boring, and there is little opportunity to move up in the organization (just because it is so flat anyway).
