Pros

highwire has a friendly, relaxed environment, and for the most part, people seem happy to work there. you can bring your dog to work with you (if it's well-behaved), and that adds to the fun atmosphere. the absolute best part of working at highwire press is that you are an employee of *stanford university*, which comes along with a tremendous set of benefits: lots of vacation, great retirement, access to athletics and classes on campus, etc.

Cons

depending on what position you have, the job skills may have limited application outside of the highwire press environment. however, in 2006 this was changing, so perhaps is better now. my job requirements did not change dramatically over the time I was there, so it got a little boring, and there is little opportunity to move up in the organization (just because it is so flat anyway).

Pros

Extreme flexibility in research objectives and how to carry them out and in work-life balance. Access to outstanding equipment, students, and scholars. Beautiful campus.

Cons

Career uncertainty in biotech field is a real problem. Severe lack of straightforward path to tenure track positions in academia is a bigger problem. Stanford has been ineffective at helping students and scholars navigate this difficult career environment. Compensation for post docs is a joke, especially since it is taking longer and longer for post docs to obtain tenure track positions - unrealistic compensation for people who now have to live off a "stipend" while starting a family - but this problem is nationwide. Horrible bureaucracy in Stanford places unrealistic burden on students and post docs - Stanford needs to reevaluate what they are doing. Parking is very far away from the medical research buildings and parking permits are very expensive for an employer that owns a tremendous amount of land.

Pros

• Being part of a prestigious organization. • Being part of an intellectual community. • Being around college students. They keep you young at heart. • Entrepreneurial spirit; Lots of opportunities to try new ideas, projects. . . • Good benefits. • Fairly stable work environment. During a recession Stanford becomes an island of relative stability. During boom times, Stanford pay is not competitive. . . • Great access to sports facilities

Cons

• Highly decentralized environment, hard to know what other offices are doing. Its like we're all working in different silos. Cooperation and and collaboration are challenging goals. • Pay could be better.
