Pros

- I have never encountered such a large group of extremely gifted/talented people - Mission statement and overall progress of the company towards it is incredibly inspiring - Even though the company has become relatively large it still feels like everyone is working as a team and is focused on the success of the product - Rate of learning is the highest I have ever had in any environment (including college) - Pace of company progress is phenomenal – no other company would allow you to develop several flight vehicles (including potentially revolutionary ones if reusability comes to fruition) from the ground up to flight in less than a decade - As an engineer you get a ton of responsibility so you can accomplish and incredible amount if you apply yourself - Stock options are valuable and are a financial opportunity very few outside of software ever get - visionary CEO who is committed to success - Overall: SpaceX is the best place to work that I know of

Cons

- Personal responsibility and expected output is high so it isn’t a great place if you are looking to just cruise through a 9 to 5 and forget about work the minute you leave - Hawthorne isn't the greatest location, though the beach is only a short drive away

Pros

Unbelievable amounts of knowledge and experience available in your fellow employees Ground breaking design and engineering challenges every project Essentially an engineering playground Steady stream of pop and movie stars getting tours

Cons

Long hours (but... rockets!) Not an ideal location Hawthorne is sorta in the ghetto, so biking to work is not the best (but I still do anyways) Technician staff could have a higher caliber

Pros

The most inspiring aspects of this job are the ability to learn a lot of new stuff quickly and the reality of seeing your work result in a finished vehicle. The work environment is fast paced and sometimes there are major changes in direction along the way, but it is great working on programs that last months or years vs decades like other aerospace projects. Through my 6 years at Spacex, I quickly developed new analysis, design, manufacturing and project management skills because of the diverse workload. Spacex is less about building a giant system to make sure that any idiot who comes to work will be able to turn the crank, and more about putting trust in smart individuals to make good decisions and get things done. To ambitious people who want to do relevant work, this is great situation. Those who just want to turn the crank need not apply.

Cons

With great power comes great responsibility. Work obligations can get in the way of personal life activities, but not to the point where I think this is a major drawback. I think a reasonable person should be able to manage the demands of SpaceX work and their personal life, although some former employee reviews suggest otherwise. The company has grown a huge amount, and critics will say that this has brought undesired changes. I'm honestly glad to be working at a successful company that is dealing with the challenges of how to manage growth instead of having to do layoffs.
