Pros

Really really smart, motivated coworkers. My coworkers were the best part of working here. Great environment, everybody is extremely friendly and helpful regardless of what they do or what department they work in. You work very hard, but the long days are often worth it with the right team. The Hawthorne office is pretty nice and the benefits are great. You get to work with rocket engineers and see awesome stuff pretty much whenever you want. The culture is very open. I love the people at this company.

Cons

Top management is unhinged and detached from reality. They want to manage everything themselves without understanding what they're really doing. They do not realize that defending against Russia takes more than a "scrappy crew". A recipe not only for failure, but disaster. They completely ignored this feedback when it was given. I got the distinct feeling that if there was a major incident, the whole team would be blamed. Why would I stay? Work life balance is something you have to earn and even then it is never guaranteed. SpaceX doesn't pay for training or conferences. They'll send you to Defcon to get drunk if you want. That's it. SpaceX also does not allow people to speak publicly at any conferences, even if it's about something done completely off of work time and unrelated to work. These things combined made it feel like I was actively hurting my career by being here. These policies are put in place by top executives, not middle management.

Pros

SUPER fast paced, get to make space history almost weekly

Cons

Worst lower, middle and VP management I have ever seen in the 16 years of my aviation / production experience. Certainly a use and abuse system when it comes to worker utilization. No work / life balance at all. No potential for fair raises or promotion unless your part of the “good-ol-boy” club and have barbecues with your boss. Constantly shifting from days to nights, sometimes twice a week if you’re an hourly employee. Was a direct employee for 2.5 years with no raise. Don’t expect to get fair market pay rate even when compared to competition directly down the road. Expect to get paid $4 - $6 less than direct comparable competition. Insurance is sub par for a company that nets over $1,000,000,000 a year.

Pros

Free coffee Secure parking They encourage 5 S and Lean sig sigma- even though they're not very good at maintaining it.

Cons

You're treated like a cockroach here. It's an organization wide problem to simply ignore emails. Schedule dictates worker safety. Don't take my word for it, check out their safety record. Sexual Harassment is almost a normal occurrence, there were company wide emails about it. People are legitimately miserable at this facility Engineers abuse technicians Work life balance.. whats that? (some supervisors come into work at 3 am and leave around 9pm. (heads up, this will be you. Working a 16 hour day due to incompetent management is not uncommon here) There is no such thing as time away from Spacex- particularly for salaried employees This is a politically run organization- meaning office politics will dictate. HIGH employee turn over- average career here is two years. When in doubt- blame the technician. Engineers treat techs as if their second rate trash Organization is too reliant on metrics. Stay away from the following departments: Composites /PAF ( management has no idea what their doing- force long hours on employees because of this. Witnessed ridiculous schedules and unsafe employee behaviors to meet them. Many of their processes are unclear and if you make a mistake- they love to point the finger. Unprofessional conduct from employees and management. Electro-mechanical ( Transducers. Transducers current management ignores vacation requests as well as employee issues and allows verbal abuse ( yelling , screaming) from engineers to techs. The current lead for this department will sit at the computer all day and ignore employees who are in need of training and assistance. The lead tech is a micromanager Solar- Terrible management. Employees are miserable and it reflects in the way they treat each other. This organization will welcome a fresh employee with open arms, then burn and spit them right out again while claiming credit for their ideas.
