Pros

right now, it is a very transformational place to work...nothing about the status quo is accepted; reward people well for changing, taking risks, doing things fast; don't have to spend a certain amount of time at each level. great brands (die hard, kenmore, craftsman) that can be great again. A splleping giant. Landsend is a strong brand that can be extended to a wider audience. They are very supportive of the online business an will use the stores and the web sites in connection with one another. The services business provides more in hoime cal than anyone in the U S A,

Cons

retail is not a great place in this economy...especially if you sell some deferrable bg ticket items like appliance and tractors. n retail, you have limited places you can cut costs ina bad economy. it takes a minimum amout of inventory, store labor and utilities to keep a store open. So you must cut marketing, IT and home office (people) costs to keep things going. Fortunately the owner really wants to transforme things and funds this. The old way of thinking gets weeded out. Just cut 401k contributions which i think is a mistake, but they are not alone and promise to renstate whenthe company makes more $.

Pros

They are wiling to throw money at associates. They offered me a job before they determined if my prior compensation listed on the application included salary and bonus, they assumed it was only salary so in 2007, when they were already struggling mightily they gave me a 25% raise in my base salary. Unfortunately this we typical of their planning as I found out once I started there.

Cons

Poor communication, lack of a plan to succeed The structure was not designed for success in the retail environment. The sheer size of the organization and the clash of the cultures between the melded companies of Kmart and Sears was still causing problems over 2 years after the merger occured.

Pros

If you need 1 paycheck, because when your hours get cut your first paycheck will be your last.

Cons

Pressure to get people to get credit cards. No information sharing and training is a joke. I went from a 30 hour week to a 0 hour week. They gave me another week of 0 hours. I THOUGHT I HAD A JOB, BUT I GUESS I DON'T. I WOULD RATHER GET A MCJOB THAN PUT UP WITH THIS CRAP. I can't believe how really awful it is. I never knew having a job could be this bad. This is a warning. Do not try to start a career here. Please try to find somewhere else to work. Don't let this happen to you.
