Great while it lasted

Pros

Pay and benefits are great. Most people are pretty nice. Training is great too. There are many projects going on simultaneously, so one has to find the right persons to get involved.

Cons

Fixed step programs are a challenge to compete when your day job is heavy with responsibility. Even tougher when completion was on everyone's objective. When times get tough, folks get defensive and protective of their jobs. There are lots of cliques, similar to high school. There are those who play the game, and those who don't. Wasn't around long enough to see the benefit. Take the quarterly reviews seriously, because meeting expectations may not be enough to stay employed.

Pros

Diverse, international coworkers. Interesting technical work - many opportunities to learn. Collaborative work environment. Vacation benefit is very good by US standards.

Cons

Layoffs are brutal during industry downturns. Technical ability is not insurance against layoffs. If you are not internationally mobile, your chances of promotion past first level team leader are remote. Typical big-company bureaucracy.

Pros

Excellent training, potential for fast promotion, some excellent people. It's a great chance to see the world and meet people from all over the place. It's a sink or swim kind of company, but if you can tough it out, it pays off well.

Cons

Subject to the oil market, pay cuts and layoffs are now the norm. The layoffs breed a fairly toxic work environment with constant blame games and throwing people under the bus. Depending on segment, you will not be able to plan anything ever. Terrible work/life balance. You'll end up fighting to be able to take vacation even with 3 months advance notice. Little to no transparency from upper management.
