Good company, but getting worse

Pros

Interesting technical work Informal workplace (though contradicted in part by the con below) Great colleagues to work with. Good amount of vacation.

Cons

Salaries are mediocre. Management is implementing more and more policies and procedures to micro-manage employees. Managers don't really manage people, they manage policies. These policies are burdensome, time-wasting, and demotivating.

Pros

Most of the people you work with are good and professional, and some of the senior management. Good benefits for international mobiles

Cons

Where do I start? I'm my opinion SLB are the epitome of the money grabbing corporation who put their shareholders in front of anything else including employees. I have no faith in the direction the company is going and am surprised that they have lasted and prospered for so long. If you are a mid career looking to join SLB then stay away. They will not use your experience and expect you to conform to what they want. What happened in your career before you get they're will not matter once you get in. Another problem is the constant changing of managers. You may have a manager who is supportive one minute and the next he or she is transferred and you could be left with someone who doesn't like you and your career in SLB stalls. Of course it could happen the other way but do you want to play Russian Roulette with your career? The company now is not the company I joined a few years ago and that is a shame. The atmosphere is now toxic and the recent global redundancies have not helped especially as the industry downturn hasn't hit those running the company. SLB was and could be a good company to work for but you will find more people leaving currently than joining and that tells its own story.

Pros

Great training, well established program to teach you the industry and especially your segment. Solid benefits, Some amazing hard working people, I was lucky to have a good, understanding FSM (manager) but heard horror stories about all others. If you're a female, and can withstand the rig culture, you have an edge over male employees. The company likes to please the female engineers as they are rare. Unfortunately it ends there...

Cons

Hostile and unprofessional work environment, High turnover of engineers, Stressful, physically demanding (knew this going in, but it took its toll much faster than I expected) Salary and bonus on continuous decline, and not great to begin with either! Cover your own butt and blame others/point the finger type of culture, The company has strong safety policies but they are ignored after training, came close to shattering my knee and breaking an ankle in only 2 months.
