Pros

Free M&M's... if you consider that a pro! Great place to work because you really don't have to. Very nice gym and subsidized meals.

Cons

I worked as an intern in 08 and had a great experience only to return in 2014 to realize how negatively the place has changed. The place runs rampid with nepotism and career paths are inhibited by VP's, Senior Directors and Managers that have been there for decades. The Education Practice is joke and is losing ground to Microsoft's R analytical platform. Pay is less than industry competition and if you want upward mobility, plan on working there for a few decades with little to no encouragement.

Pros

SAS is annually one of the best companies in the world to work for in terms of benefits, quality of life and general work environment. Bonuses, if you're part of the Sales organization, can be significant, as can profit sharing and other income opportunities. Salary is below the industry average.. The HQ is like a beautiful college campus, with onsite healthcare, pharmacy, gym, daycare, tennis courts pool and more.

Cons

The problem with being a fantastic company to work for is that very few employees leave, and most of those that do are the ones that have hit their head on the ceiling and really want to do more. Management and other leadership positions are hard to come by because those positions rarely open up. Most employees have no real career path beyond <title>, senior <title> and principal <title>, and those are really just about the same job. Line managers know this and really struggle to sell a career path in the hiring process. Folks based at HQ lead the good life. If you're remote or work at home, the fantastic campus and associated benefits just look like a giant expense sink hole

Company is lost at sea

Pros

People are mostly very nice. Certain uses of the products do help make the world a better place. For some departments, work/life balance is great. If your leader is a workaholic, though, that goes out the window. The campus environment is quite pleasant (art, walking trails, new buildings, great gym, etc.) The subsidized food is amazing. So is being able to order meals to take home. Being closed between Christmas and New Years is nice. If all you are looking for is comfort, SAS may be the place for you.

Cons

If you can see beyond the end of your own nose, SAS might not be the place for you. Feels like a cult...insular and self-absorbed. A culture of leaders not trusting their people and micromanaging their work. Tons of nepotism. Noticeable levels of sexism. People who have been there forever and never leave make it hard to advance. People who have never worked anywhere else or seen anything other than the world of SAS make it very hard to introduce any fresh ideas. Climate feels stale and inward-looking. Company doesn't see itself clearly and is far too impressed with itself. Bad leaders are left in place FOREVER. Customers say the product is antiquated and hard to use, and it feels like the business is starting to slip away. Company is managed by fiat. Dr. Goodnight is a dictator, and not always a benevolent one. Salaries are lower than they should be. If you don't have kids, you may feel like you are subsidizing everyone else's daycare bill. The SAS you hear about is the SAS of 20 years ago. When I left, morale was seriously slipping, just like the best place to work rankings.
