Pros

Discount for HQ staff Flexible working options available for some teams. Opportunity to meet nice, like-minded individuals within your team, which can make the experience more bearable if your lucky conversations with employees about the state of the company can offer a sense of solidarity.

Cons

The work environment at River Island HQ is extremely toxic and demoralising. I'm writing this to genuinely warn potential employees. The turnover rate is alarmingly high across all departments, including HR and finance. The IT and tech teams, in particular, suffer from a complete lack of growth opportunities and a non-existent tech culture. Management continually reduces headcount while piling more work on the remaining staff without additional pay or compensation. The lack of adequate support and the unreasonable demands placed on employees create a highly stressful and unhealthy atmosphere with a constant pressure from management. The new CEO has been dismantling teams as the business struggles to maintain its former position. The HR team pretends that everything is fine, but even they experience a high turnover rate. The finance team is equally plagued by constant staff changes, making it difficult to maintain any sense of stability or morale. Employees in the clothing/design departments also face terrible working environments which has led to many resignations. In the IT and tech departments, there's no room for professional growth or development. There's a severe lack of a supportive tech culture, which stifles innovation and motivation. Despite constant talks about change, nothing positive ever materialises. The company lacks any semblance of work culture or growth opportunities. Honestly, after working here, I will have a hard time wanting to work for another clothing company again. The environment within the head office is chaotic, with limited space and constant relocations. In summary, River Island HQ is a terrible place to work. The toxic culture, combined with relentless pressure and lack of support, makes it an environment to avoid at all costs.

Pros

Honestly none other than discount

Cons

the whole management is a clique, they are so rude and don’t even acknowledge the sales advisors unless you were apart of the clique, the managers are so lazy it’s unbearable, the floor would often be so busy and uncontrollable and the store manager would walk down stairs do a lap of the shop floor then go back up to her office, there was no support what so ever! If you do end up working here expect to be practically forced to do overtime and go over your contracted hours for management that don’t even appreciate it! Not 90% employee discount can justify working for the place!. When I started It was my first retail job- which I stated, so therefore I thought I would get training, pfft did I get it wrong, there was no training what so ever, you ‘shadowed’ a member of staff for one day, there is no training plan, what so ever. So unless you have worked in retail before and know what to do your going to struggle. They would give 17 year olds management perks, such as bossing others around which they loved, I didn’t really see the one girl doing much expect walking around with the rota all day bossing people around, but obviously she was apart of the ‘clique’ so that was ok for her to do. Honestly the worst place ever, they also hired loads of people for temporary staff and in the interviews they were told they were likely to be kept on, however when it came to it they kept no one on except the cousins of a member of the ‘clique’, coincidence considering she was only there 3 weeks and got kept on? Honestly if you want to work somewhere where you feel valued and supported then this isn’t the place for you.
