Pros

I worked for Spherion in one of the corporate offices prior to their having been bought out by Randstad. The employees were naturally concerned when we were told that our company had been acquired, and the "big wigs" came in and presented all sorts of slideshows and idealistic speeches about how the company was going to get much better. The pros for working with Spherion were wonderful - great pay, benefits, and a genuine desire to see all employees succeed. There was an open-door policy with upper management that made employees feel as though their concerns would be heard and addressed.

Cons

All the reassurances and posturing about the grand ideas Randstad had for Spherion were outright untruths. Since the acquisition, things for Spherion have taken a rapid downturn. The transition was a complete mess, with bad communicating, inadequate training on the new systems, and the general feeling that we had been subject to a "hostile takeover." Most of the employees were in fear of losing their jobs, and there was little done to attempt to reassure us. There have always been flaws in the training system, but instead of attempting to fix them, the CEO decided to send in an cold, unpersonable manager to fire anyone she considered to be "underperforming." As a result, many hard-working employees found themselves out of a job, and the company lost several valuable clients.

Pros

The office building and accomodations were very nice. The benefits were phenominal and the base salary was good. I was able to meet great talent and learn a lot from those candidates.

Cons

There was absolutely no opportunity for growth and the turnover was extremely high. That particular office was set up to only allow one recruiter on the temp side to be successful. That recruiter was not only my competitor, but my manager. The company gave him zero incentive for me to do well, but ironically he had all of the control over my success. The office methodology was very transactional and my fellow associates lacked respect for one another. There were three offices within a fifteen mile radius and rather than going after new clients and candidates, an enormous amount of time was wasted on inter-company arguments about client and candidate ownership.

Pros

You will learn a lot quickly, develop problem-solving skills, and learn to develop your own processes and tools because you won't get the resources, technology, headcount, or training you should have to perform your job. You will be so undervalued it's possible to triple your salary when you leave.

Cons

You will have to learn quickly because it is a sink-or-swim culture that makes everyone "learn the job before they get it". So you won't be compensated appropriately for the work you do. You'll be taken advantage of and promised raises and increases only to discover "the budget doesn't allow for a promotion" even though the work requires you to perform the job of your promised title without the pay. This will happen with every promotion you get and people will tell you "Randstad makes up for it eventually". Meaning, when you get to a high enough position, you will start making adequate money. Understand, that will not happen until after you are an SVP and then you too have the joy of treating people in this same way if you want your region to perform at the same level as your peers.
