Pros

a few nice coworkers who are supportive of one another though the trials and tribulations of working here; a manager who is trying their best to help employee morale in a poor situation.

Cons

i felt completely misled after accepting this job as i found out more and more about how things really are here. for professional staff there are no paid holidays, nor is there 'real' sick time. you have a paid leave bank, which is tiny compared to elsewhere, which you are required to use for the 5 major holidays that they are closed, in addition to your sick time. their idea of sick time is this odd extended sick leave pay, which you accrue like you would normal sick pay, but it can only be used if you're sick for more than three days or are admitted to a hospital. you also are not given any sort of leave or the shoddy extended sick pay for the fist 6 months that you are employed here. you are expected to take holidays where your department is closed as unpaid, and unpaid days if you are ill for those first 6 months. morale is very poor here. employees can be divided into 2 groups - those who are actively trying (desperately) to find other work, and those whose spirits are so squashed that they think there is no hope for them so they might as well stay. they haven't had proper raises in ages, the office equipment is sub-par or positively geriatric. the cancer center here, until only a few years ago, had almost an entire management staff that was related. it was an ethical disasterland. this type of situation can be seen in other areas of the hospital, because it is definitely not uncommon for children or family of physicians to work here as well. the instutution as a whole has definitely made cutting costs their priority, to the detriment of their patients and their employees. many nurses have quit due to the severe staffing shortages, stating that when an accident happens due to the lack of staffing, they will be the one blamed. it's sad.. i really expected much more of this place. there are also a lot of ethical issues that present themselves if you are not coming from a faith-based institution. Providence is not catholic in name only - it will affect your medical care and what information you will and will not recieve. If you participate in a clinical trial, forget receiving any of the proper reproductive risk information on your consent form. i can't believe that they are legally allowed to get away with half of this stuff. Avoid this place at all costs - as both a perspective employee and a patient.

Overworked - Underpaid

Pros

Few good coworkers/employees to work with who somehow have managed to stick it out despite the excessive workload and expectations.

Cons

You will find yourself continually given more and more work without any thought as to how much work is too much work. The pay does not match the amount and difficulty/expectations of work. You will be underpaid and be continually asked to do more in less time. There is a gossipy atmosphere amongst employees which creates an untrustworthy environment. There is very little flexibility which hinders any kind work/life balance. You will find that employees leave, are let go, or retire, but their positions will not be filled and then their workload will fall upon the remaining employees. Expect to do the work of 2-3 people at any given time. It does not appear to be the goal of management to care about the employees, they will say that they do, but in action they do not.

Pros

The people are very collegial and the benefits are decent. The Mission is inspiring.

Cons

Management does not "walk the talk," and is very self oriented and out of touch. Word on the street when I took the job years ago was that they exploit people via the attachment to and honoring of the mission. They overwork you and pay you below market. And they expect you to be happy to do so b/c the Mission is so compelling. This has proven to be true.
