Pros

Sacred Heart is one of the most stable employers in the region. There were some layoffs a few years ago, but things have really turned around and they are hiring for more new positions again. They offer good pay and solid benefits, and being such a large workplace, there is plenty of opportunity for development and advancement.

Cons

There seems to be a tolerance for mediocre and low performance, from front-line staff to middle and upper management as well. This includes physicians as well. There is a lot of pressure to be fast, with not as much effort towards quality. Mistakes and errors are covered up and forgotten, instead of dealing with them openly and transparently.

Pros

Patient safety is core to everything you do at Providence. This aspect of working with them is highly motivational. Providence is a religious organization with a long history (over 100 years) of providing services from a catholic perspective so don't expect family planning services any time soon. That being said, the hospitals are well run and the new focus on elder care is a perfectly timed entry into an undeserved market with tight margins (clients with fixed incomes). Away from the line of business (nearer the corporate offices in Renton) is where the political infighting frequently gets out of control. As long as you are a professional healthcare provider and avoid the management chain, you will find this to be a rewarding place to work.

Cons

The management team is confrontational and distracted by infighting.

Pros

The organization's 150-year Catholic heritage and mission and core values (respect, compassion, justice, excellence, stewardship) are taken seriously and understood by all, and are sources of pride and commitment. Work/life balance is strong and without lots of over-night travel and pesky, unnecessary meetings. PH&S is a very stable employer, rarely (if ever) in it's history having a significant layoff. Overall, personnel are very friendly and get along well. The benefits package is strong with several nice perks for full- or near-full time employees (i.e., free yearlong transit pass; free parking at most facilities; subsidized meals and pharmacy products etc.).

Cons

Overall, the organization is too tight with the purse strings...pay increases are minimal and no bonuses; technology, productivity tools and office facilities and supplies are frequently far outdated; employee training programs and prof. development are on the cheap or denied; etc. etc. Also, very slow to promote good/qualified talent and release the bad talent. The organization talks a lot about respecting diversity, but little evidence of ethnic diversity in visible management roles or recruitment efforts. Top/down management culture means not being included at the decision-table when you should be and being relegated to an "implementer."; not to mention you're often made "accountable," but not often given proper authority.
