Pros

Used to have great education benefits and you can gain experience quickly.

Cons

"Put your time in" attitude makes those who are motivated and talented very frustrated. Career progression in engineering in particular is painfully slow. Pay is targeted at the low end of industry and you are almost guaranteed to be under paid your entire time at the company and you are told that no one can correct that. If you are smart and motivated, this is not a good place to spend a career. If you want a 9-5 and little accountability and are willing to give up pay and career progression, this may be the right place for you.

Pros

PW works on some of the coolest, hardest problems that you can work on as an engineer. There are alot of incredibly talented people here drawn to working on those problems that are amazing to work with. The pay and benefits are about average for the industry but not amazing. There is also alot of opportunity if you get positioned correctly and the potential to make a career here but there is luck involved. Even if you only stay for a few years it can be a good place to learn and grow, but it is somewhat up to the group and luck.

Cons

If you do decide to try and make a career here be careful. PW recently fired a bunch of people the day after reporting that the company was making more than it was making the previous year and overall doing well. This "layoff" didn't target low performers, overstaffed departments, or projects that are being canceled. Many of people were key personnel and many others were new, recently hired people that could have been moved to areas in need. These "layoffs" were entirely increase profit margins to appease shareholders and csuite with no thought to the impact on the moral of the workforce. PW has dealt with alot recently. During covid there was a hiring freeze, furloughs, no merit, voluntary separations, forced separations (firings). After they tried to hire themselves out of the hole they had put themselves into staffing wise to support the rebounding aero market and as a temporary solution had forced overtime for months. Then they had new issues which caused a fresh hiring freeze and below inflation merit increases. Now, when it seems things are finally getting going in the right direction again, they shoot what was left of employee moral out back behind the woodshed to pad the profits with the aforementioned "layoffs". I hope this is the last of the bleeding but I can't help but feel it is not.

Pros

- Cool engineering and design discussions, lots of learning - Some people were nice - My direct management team was always very respectful and encouraged me to network and pursue any growth or learning opportunity - Opportunity for growth, as there is such a high turnover - Compensation and benefits

Cons

- Lack of training and knowledge transfer - A lot of people were really mean and unprofessional - Poor talent retention, which causes loss of important knowledge and information about projects - Constant layoffs and "restructures" have caused some people to be extremely overloaded with work - The "survivors" of those layoffs or restructures to departments have some sort of collective trauma that makes some of them to be paranoid, not willing to share any information or training - This lack of communication/knowledge transfer/information makes it very difficult to make things right, as there are too many gaps or things that are not right - Whenever you point this out, in an effort of doing things right, management will dismiss you and encourage you to continue doing things that you are unsure of. This is very risky, specially when you are working with changes to jet engine parts. This is the main reason I decided to quit, as I didn't want to be part of it. - A lot of people like to play political games, it seemed to me like what matters is who you know and who likes you, and not your performance. This is reason #2 of why I left. I prefer transparency and being measured based on my performance.
