Pros

Good work/life balance Work for a leading player in the payments industry Work for a company that people are familiar with

Cons

Too many people at PayPal are working on the same things because senior managers are more concerned with building their empires and taking turf away from others than in the overall good of the company. People get promoted based on who they know and what they look like rather than their merits. PayPal does nothing to advance your career. Want to get promoted? Find a manager who likes how you suck up. Want to find a new role in the company? Do it yourself. There'll be little to no support from your management to find the right job for you. Want to get visibility? Sorry, not here. You feed your work to your manager so he/she can report it up and get visibility for themselves.

Pros

Management cares about the people under them and the company cares about the people it hires. Work/life balance is supported, trust among peers is evident. Camaraderie, friendship, company culture make the days go by easy.

Cons

Legacy code-base makes innovation difficult. Projects have more overhead than production. Organization structure discourages teamwork. Very rare to work on a project your proud of.

Pros

The company is very successful, and as a result can afford to compensate employees very well. In San Jose, the amenities are also very nice (on site gym, nice cafeteria, and a lot of social activities during and after work hours), and employees are encouraged to take advantage of them. The talent level of the software team is very high. Working with team members and other teams is an enjoyable experience.

Cons

Unlike many internet companies PayPal is driven by a precise business model (payments) as opposed to technology. This has led to the company's success in becoming the dominant online payment system. The downside to this is that much of the technical decisions and execution were done in haste in order to bring features to market quickly. Also, the nature of payments requires a high degree of coupling between the various components. Because of this the code and systems put in place sometimes makes it a difficult environment to work in.
