Layoffs everywhere!

Pros

Good place to pick up some experience to get your foot in the door. Flexible hours and liberal work from home opportunities.

Cons

Job security is practically non-existent and morale is terrible. Management has been off-shoring jobs to India and the Philippines for almost a year. The analogy of "rats off a sinking ship" comes to mind, nearly every employee in my department is desperately looking for another job before another round of layoffs is announced. Very scary times at this company!

Private equity sale is ruining a once-great company

Pros

Pros are: -- Still a big name in the CRO industry -- Lots of history -- Good "work from home" policy very much depending on your group

Cons

--Less pay than other CROs --Works its employees to the bone, and then some --Worse employee morale than at any point in the past decade --People in general no longer feel loyalty or pride in working for PPD, as it is obvious over the past 2-3 years that "PPD" is truly about nothing but "more money, faster". No one thought that it could possibly be worse to be owned by private equity than it was to be 'owned' by the quarterly results and the stock market....but we were all wrong.

Pros

Depending on what group you're in and who your main client is, you will most likely have a lot of opportunities to work overtime and make a decent amount of additional money/get incentives (Gift cards - amount varies among groups). You start with 17 days of PTO - wow. Depending on your group, you'll move up to associate scientist in one year. Good benefits.

Cons

PPD is hiring a lot of student out of college right now because the GMP portion in Middleton, WI is doing well and gaining clients. However, PPD is all about money. Promotions only occur in April of each year, unless you apply for a different position within the company. Because PPD hired so many people last year, some may not get the promotions they deserve solely because PPD doesn't want to spend that much money. Promotions aren't based on your work and how well you perform, they're mostly based off of length of service there. Someone who started in June will get a promotion over someone who started in July of the previous year. Everyone in the office hates on PPD. No one actually WANTS to be there because corporate tries to act like they care about employees…they have a terrible way of showing that. I've made many good friends from working at PPD, however, every one of them intends on leaving in the near future.
