      A good company to work for if you know someone important

      Pros

      If you know someone important within the company, your career and pay could skyrocket.

      Cons

      The pay is not very competitive among the industry, especially for non-construction related supporting staff. They expect you to work for a long time period in order to earn dividend income over time, but again, if you are a supporting staff, your salary and share dividend are incomparable with project managers, superintendent, etc. There are opportunities to move up within the company; however, you must be willing to relocate due to the nature of the business.

      Feels Like a Job, Not a Career

      Pros

      Good paycheck, especially for newer hires. Starting salaries are competitive in the industry.

      Cons

      Recruiters use false statements to lure top talent. Such as, "big company with a small company family feel". This is completely false, the company has a cold mega corporate feeling. Another misleading line is the mentorship program. No such program exists, and don't expect any mentoring whatsoever. Instead of mentoring, you will likely experience overhearing superintendents condisendily speaking about their staff. The employee ownership program was also used by recruiters, however experienced employees at PCL simply state "it's not what it used to be".

It is disappointing to hear that your experience at PCL is not reflected by what was told to you during the interview process. The PCL family of companies does have the support of a large company, but each office operates independently giving it the small company environment.
