It's a job. "It's just how it is."
Pros
Pay is decent.regular time off. Friendly people to work with. You wave at each other when you drive by. Generally when an emergency occurs everyone works to the same goal no problems. As long as you call in and talk to your coworkers/boss you will be ok. Say if you overslept and just woke up, as long as you call in and let them know you are going to be late its ok if its once in a blue moon. Your car breaks down, you need to take off because you have no babysitter, you forget something and need to turn around: its ok they are understanding and people are flexible to cover your shift until you get there in a reasonable time. Just know if you missed a half hour you log that on your time sheet. 40 hours a week. Paid time off 401K, dental and vision Time and a half overtime, 8 hours extra pay on a holiday week. Excellent safety training and policy training.
Cons
Limited advancement, you will have to wait years until the guy above you retires, quits, or gets fired for advancement. Working on a military base, sometimes just getting on base to the job site is a battle. Extra traffic at times. Though the base security is nice and professional and just doing what they need to do. The whole DS2 team does their part to fix a problem and the Government won't take timely appropriate action to fix their own problem. So in turn you keep dealing with their problem, it wastes time ,money , and man power. That money could have been used to update or replace years outdated equipment and save money in the long run. Headaches from fixing the same equipment that you reported up needs replaced. The feeling of doing your part right away and those outside the company seem as though they don't have to be as expeditious as your team. Bittersweet Skimpy on overtime, but the pro is more time off. Its frustrating to take a day off and find someone to cover it for who is more than willing to work it. Mainly so your work gets done as if you were there. Then someone getting paid more money than you takes your shift because he can and you have to do the work you weren't there to do anyway. "It's just how it is." The occupation with the most drama and complaining is the one with the most free time to gripe about it. Wore the same DS2 T-shirts for years and they have holes in them from day to day work and normal wear and tear. Some company vehicles are in disrepair due to the money required to fix them ,but they sure are clean and shiny inside!
