Same Old Corporate Stuff: Outsourcing to Pinch Pennies

Pros

It was great in the beginning.

Cons

My time as a customer support representative at OpenTable has come to an end, thanks to their move to outsource my position to Mexico. It's like they pulled the rug out from under me, and I'm left feeling totally betrayed and tossed aside. Seriously, they say they care about us, but this outsourcing thing? Super cold-hearted. It's like they cared more about saving money than about their current employees having a steady job/ income. I thought working at OpenTable would be all about helping customers and being part of a cool team, but nope. Instead, they showed me the exit sign, like they couldn't care less. This whole thing has left me feeling totally let down and annoyed. Makes me wonder if they care about us at all or if we're just easy to toss aside for some extra cash. And let's talk about those raises they keep talking up. During one of their all-hands meetings, they mentioned giving raises based on inflation, that never happened. They're all about bragging about their profits, but the raise they gave me, a total joke. They practically wave their profits in front of us at their all-hands meetings while we're struggling to pay the bills with our tiny paychecks. I got a 76¢ raise after working there for a year!! And they told me to take it or leave it, no room for negotiation. Working under my supervisor was a real letdown. It felt like he was barely there half the time. Meetings? Forget about it. He was a master at skipping those, leaving me hanging and wondering what the heck was going on. As far as feedback, it was like pulling teeth to get any sort of guidance on what I could do better. I mean, isn't that part of their job – to help me improve? It was like they were too busy or just couldn't be bothered to give a little direction. It's frustrating when you're trying to do your best and you're left in the dark, flying solo without any support. I was hoping to learn and grow in my role, but with this supervisor, it felt more like I was left to figure it out on my own. When I sent him a direct message about me being fired, all I received was a corporate response on our team channel. He didn't even try to reach out personally, I received no response. I felt so blindsided by this, even my coworkers sent me private messages saying how sorry they were that this happened to me! Honestly, this whole experience has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. OpenTable's actions and empty words just don't match up. It's a real wake-up call about where their priorities are, and it's not with us – If you're an employee working in the states, I'd recommend you start looking for a job asap!! Seems like they're going to start outsourcing to Mexico for the customer support positions.

Pros

You get to work with restaurants and feel like you are making a positive impact on their business. It's fun to be part of the restaurant community

Cons

There's been a big shift in culture since all the leaders from Kayak came over. The culture is toxic and you don't feel as if management has your back. Goals are all about revenue first and foremost. For historically being a leader in hospitality tech, it's no longer a hospitable company. Only a matter of time until customers see this.

Pros

Easy to find life long friends as you are sharing the same bad feelings.

Cons

Micromanaging all agents in a very harsh way. Also, mid-tier management is incompetent and trying to blame other managers for their own mistakes (talking about support). Director has been there since the beginning but still can't understand the updated needs of the team. Too bad that they can't keep the good people and and only keep people that are high in numbers but low in quality of service.
